Prepare Your Home For Wind Damage

3/30/2022 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Greenwich, we want to help you prepare for the possibility of wind damage. While it is not a huge issue in Fairfield County, it can be some of the most costly to remediate. This is because wind damage can cause massive issues with your roof and exterior, which may cause other secondary problems down the road.

That being said, preparing for wind damage is not too hard.  Below, we’ve listed a few ways that you can insulate yourself against major damage from wind during a storm or otherwise.  Following any or all of these actions may save you both headache and financial burden in the future.

Check your roof - make sure that shingles are all properly secured so that wind will not tear them and blow them away.

Trim your trees - loose and dead limbs can easily be blown into your house, which can cause major damage.

Dispose of loose debris - keeping a tidy yard will eliminate items that could potentially hit your home.  This can even extend to smaller items that you keep outside.

Deal with larger items - items like a grill, outdoor furniture, and bicycles should either be secured outside or stored inside before a storm.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any storm damage. SERVPRO of Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

We Invest In Our Team

We pride ourselves on immaculate customer service.  If we don’t have you, then we don’t exist.  That’s why we strive every day to take care of those people that we help to the utmost degree.  One way that we ensure that this happens is by investing in our staff, both in quantity and quality.

Quantity

When people get overwhelmed or overloaded, that is when performance drops.  We continually hire new staff members to handle the increase in our business that we’ve seen over the past few years.  Having team members who can dedicate the appropriate time and effort to their tasks makes for a more efficient and powerful presence.  This holds true for office staff and field technicians.

Quality

We also make sure that our team members are all well-trained from the outset of their career with us.  Each person is trained heavily in their role so that they are equipped to best serve our customers.  We also routinely attend training and continuing education seminars, so that we learn the best practices.

Don’t Wait To Start Remediation

3/24/2022 (Permalink)

No one wants to experience property damage, both for emotional and financial reasons.  When this damage does occur at your property, you may want to file an insurance claim.  You may also be tempted to not clean anything, because you think it will detract from the money that you will get from your insurance company.  But this isn't actually true.

You Won’t Lose Money Cleaning Up

You may think that by seeing the maximum extent of the damage, you will get the most money from your insurance company, so you hold off on remediating any damage.

On the contrary, the insurance company may not send an adjuster out to inspect the damage until some of the damage has been removed, and it is safe to be in the space. Start the cleanup process as soon as you can.  You should document any cleanup that you do, so that you are fairly compensated for your loss and efforts.

Attic Moisture Is Not Good

3/23/2022 (Permalink)

Moisture and water damage can occur anywhere in a home or business.  But there are areas that are at higher risk for these types of problems.  Due to the fact that attics and crawl spaces are not frequented, moisture and water within may go unnoticed for a longer period of time.  This can lead to a myriad of issues.

Mold Growth

Unchecked and unattended water may lead to the growth of mold.  This is especially true when temperatures begin to warm, as it only heightens the likelihood of perfect conditions for growth.

Foul Odors

Due to mold, or just musty conditions, you may develop a bad smell that can only be fixed by drying and deodorizing the affected area.

Destruction of Belongings

Anything that you have stored in these spaces may become compromised by water damage or mold.

To prevent any of these issues from happening, make it a habit to check your attic and crawl spaces for moisture regularly.  Also, make sure that your roof is secure, and replace any shingles that are damaged or missing.

Contents Services After A Fire

3/21/2022 (Permalink)

After a fire in your home or business, it is rarely only the structure that is affected.  Almost always, items within the area will be affected by smoke and soot damage.  This can cause unsightly discoloration and/or obtrusive odors.  Some of the items will be beyond repair, but some will hopefully be salvageable.

As part of our comprehensive fire damage remediation process, we will take inventory of all of the items in the area.  We will then assess all the pieces, and see which items can be salvaged and which items need to be discarded and replaced.  We will take all of the salvageable items and pack them up.  Then we will bring them to our secure facility, where we will perform deodorization and cleaning procedures.  Once all the pieces are restored to preloss condition, we will pack them back up and store them.  After our team is finished with the damage remediation at your property, we will bring your belongings back to you.

Trash Chute Fire Leads To Massive Water Damage

3/15/2022 (Permalink)

Recently, a mid-size apartment building had an unusual fire occur that turned into a large-scale disaster.

Somehow, a fire started on the sixth floor of the building inside the trash chute.  The heat and smoke tripped the smoke alarms and the building’s sprinkler system.  While the fire itself was not that large, the water used by the fire department and the water from the sprinkler system created thousands of gallons of water that needed to be removed.  Furthermore, the water began to descend from the sixth floor, and pour into at least the two floors below on that side of the building.  While the sprinklers may have saved the building from further fire damage, the water was an issue.

SERVPRO of Greenwich was called in to fix the issue, which had occurred around 10pm.  Our crew responded quickly with the appropriate equipment and materials.  We extracted the excess water first, so that proper drying equipment could be set up.  An array of dehumidifiers and air movers were strategically placed throughout the area with an hour to begin the process.

Spring Cleaning Can Save You

3/11/2022 (Permalink)

With warmer temperatures on the horizon, spring showers and heavier storms are undoubtedly on the way.  During the spring season, we see numerous damages to homes and businesses as a result of these springtime storms.  In most cases, these could have been avoided if the property owner had just taken a small number of preventative measures.  Here are a few easy things you can do before a storm hits to save you time, money, and grief.

Inspect your gutters

Gutters naturally become clogged over time, due to leaves, rocks, twigs, and other organic material.  When too much matter builds up, water can no longer flow freely away from your property.  This can cause water to build up on your roof, which can cause roof damage.  Additionally, if water cannot flow away from the property, it may seep into your basement, causing damage that way.  Check your entire gutter system for clogs and make sure all connections are secure.

Inspect seals around the property

All of the windows and doors in your home have a seal around them, whether it is plastic or caulked.  When these seals become compromised, they are susceptible to allowing water inside.  This is especially true in our area, where spring storms can bring heavy rainfall.  Check that all seals around your property are intact and water-tight.  While not technically a seal, your roof does provide a barrier to the top of your house.  Make sure that there are no missing or broken shingles that could let water in.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any storm damage. SERVPRO of Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

This Simple Inspection Could Save You From The Next Storm

3/9/2022 (Permalink)

Every year, we see hundreds of basements that have suffered water damage.  There are many factors or causes for water damage in a basement.  Burst pipes, sump pump failure, and water tank backups are among these causes.  But no cause is more preventable than water coming in as a result of a crack in your foundation.

Even a small crack in your foundation can expose you to water damage risk.  This risk is heightened during the spring storm season.  Water can easily seep in through the tiniest of cracks, and accumulate on the inside, resulting in major damage.  In some extreme cases, wind can cause the cracks to get bigger, which just allows more water in if the conditions are right.

You should conduct an annual check on your foundation to ensure that it is watertight, save for the sump pump, if present.  Check both the outside above-ground portion, as well as the interior below-ground portion of your foundation.  This will ensure that you are checking for anywhere that water could come in.  If you notice any cracks, regardless of size, contact a professional or seal the cracks yourself.

Commercial Kitchen Cleaning

3/7/2022 (Permalink)

One thing that Fairfield County can boast is a plethora of amazing restaurants that run throughout.  They serve us great food, and we have a diverse selection of options.  But having a high-capacity kitchen can get dirty very quickly.  Even restaurants that abide by health codes can have areas that need to be deep cleaned once in a while.

Kitchens can have many types of material build up over time.  Debris can fall between cooking stations, oil residue can build up on ceilings and walls.

That’s why SERVPRO of Greenwich offers our commercial deep cleaning services to restaurants in the area.  Even though the staff cleans the kitchen every night, we can come in and remove even the toughest materials.  We have the tools, equipment, and proven techniques to clean your commercial kitchen today.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of property damage. SERVPRO of Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who need damage restoration at their business property.  If you have any type of property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Springtime Storm Damage

3/4/2022 (Permalink)

With temperatures starting to trend upward, we are hopefully leaving winter storm damage in the past, at least until next year.  That being said, springtime storm damage presents a different set of problems that can be equally as harmful.  You need to be aware of all the ways that a storm during this season can negatively affect you and your property.  They can include:

  • Structural damage to your property as a result of fallen trees or high wind blowing debris
  • Broken windows from fallen trees or high wind blowing debris
  • Lightning strikes, which are more common during spring and summer than any other season
  • Fallen or damaged power lines around your property
  • Water damage from loss of structural integrity
  • Basement flooding
  • Power outages, which can lead to sump pump failure

An added factor that is unique to warmer weather storms is that higher temperatures lead to mold growth much faster, if water damage occurs as a result of storm damage.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any storm damage. Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Sometimes Fire Damage Is Invisible

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

When a fire occurs in a home or business, the fire puts out a couple byproducts. One such byproduct is soot, which can come in a few forms.  Another byproduct is smoke, which has an off-putting smell. Unlike the soot, which is dark in contrast to walls and objects, smoke odors can linger and hide.

Removing smoke odors can be the most difficult part of the restoration process following a fire. There is no visible sign of the smoke odor, so it is hard to know where to clean.  Proper technique, tools, and thoroughness are all necessary when attempting to remove odors from a home.  This means odors must be properly removed from all surfaces, porous and nonporous alike.  It also means carefully removing odors from items like carpets and furniture.

The other hard part about smoke odor damage is the fact that it can spread anywhere that airflow takes it.  This means that to remediate the damage properly, cleaning must encompass the entire area, not just the source of the fire.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any fire or smoke damage. Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

What Can Be Salvaged After Smoke Damage?

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

While house fires can be very destructive, there may be items and elements of your home that can be saved.  Although there are a variety of these items, most can be put into a couple categories.

Hard, Nonporous Items

Items in this category will fare relatively well after a fire, assuming they are not burned or melted.  This is because their nonporous characteristics allow them to not be penetrated by discoloration, foul odors, or water used in firefighting efforts.

Glass - windows, dinnerware, and other glass items stand up well in heat, and can be easily washed until clean.

Metal - Metal will rarely melt in a normal house fire, so they can also be washed

Hardwood flooring - due to most floors having a finish on them, they can be cleaned and refinished after remediation is complete.

Washable Items

On the other hand, cloth items will probably be penetrated by smoke and soot, unlike hard materials.  But they can be more vigorously cleaned in the washing machine, where hard materials cannot.  Anything that can go in the washer can usually be saved, provided that they are not directly damaged by the fire.

Clothes, furniture covers, curtains, and other cloth items can easily be put into the washing machine to be cleaned.  It may take an extra wash or two to completely remove odors, but it should get the job done.

What most likely won’t be salvageable:

- Nonperishable foods

- Perishable foods left at room temperature

- Medicine, cosmetics, and hygiene products

- Damaged cloth items

The usual rule of thumb is to discard anything that you are unsure of.  Contaminated items can always be replaced if they are not sentimental.  Contaminated items can also lead to lingering smoke odors in your home. It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any fire or smoke damage. Commercial Pest Cleanup

2/25/2022 (Permalink)

During the winter months, we all like to keep our offices warm.  Unfortunately, these warm conditions invite critters of all shapes and sizes to seek shelter.  Similar to our homes, it is not uncommon to find mice and other vermin in commercial settings.  And as we all know, these animals can make quite the mess, made worse by the length of their stay within our walls.

While SERVPRO of Greenwich is not in the extermination business, we excel at the cleanup of the aftermath.

If you see evidence of rodents or other vermin, you should seek out the assistance of a professional exterminator as soon as possible.  Once they have done their job, your next call should be to us.  We will come in and clean all the areas where the critters lived.  Whether it is nesting, food, or animal waste, we can safely and securely clean your building or office so that your employees can continue to work in a safe and clean environment.

What Happens If Your Toilet Backs Up

2/24/2022 (Permalink)

Sewage back-up can happen for a number of reasons.  It can result from a clog, a full septic tank, or a heavy rainstorm.  You can often feel helpless as you watch the water reach the top of the toilet and then start to pour out onto the surrounding floor.  It also may feel gross, as we all know what sewage contains.  But there are steps you can take to limit the damage and get you back to normal as soon as possible.

  1. Shut off your water - You do not want any more water than is already present to backflow out of the toilet.
  2. Throw rags on the water to soak it up - Use cloth that you do not mind discarding afterwards.  This will limit how much the water is able to flow through the floor and walls.  Do not attempt to clean the area, as you risk contamination and adverse health effects.
  3. Call your plumber - Get a plumber out to fix the issue.
  4. Call a damage remediation company - This will likely need a professional fix, for the safety of you and your family, as well as for mitigating the risk of water damage now and down the road.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Greenwich Fire Aftermath

2/21/2022 (Permalink)

Recently, a townhouse complex in Greenwich had a fire that spread through multiple units. The fire started as a result of faulty and old wiring that had not been checked in many years.  The wire sparked after overheating and caught the wooden frame on fire.  Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of the fire itself.  Unfortunately, the fire consumed one of the units, so a complete rebuild of the townhouse was needed.

While the homeowners were inspecting the damage, one of them actually fell through the floor, as the structure had become compromised due to the fire.  Thankfully they were not injured, and only suffered a few scrapes.  Structural damage is always a concern after a fire, which is why you should use caution.  You should also hire a certified professional remediation company to fix the damage.

SERVPRO of Greenwich was called in to restore the property to preloss condition.  We executed a full restoration, which consisted of damage remediation, and reconstruction of the unit. The customer was definitely satisfied by the results.

It is important to contact a certified fire and smoke damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of damage. SERVPRO of Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who need damage restoration at their business property.  If you have any type of commercial property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Commercial Mold Remediation

2/9/2022 (Permalink)

When mold grows in a commercial setting, it is usually the result of some type of leak in the building. Common areas include the kitchen, the roof, or the HVAC system. Whatever the source, mold needs to be removed to keep your employees safe and healthy.  This is especially important for those with allergies or respiratory conditions.

You should not try to remove the mold yourself.  It can quickly become overwhelming, and may not be enough to return your space to satisfactory condition, even if it looks like it.  That being said, acting quickly is important. After identifying that your business has mold that needs to be removed, make your first call to SERVPRO of Greenwich.

SERVPRO of Greenwich will efficiently and safely remove excess mold spores without spreading them into the air, and ensuring that the mold will not grow back under optimal conditions.  Our mold remediation technicians are equipped with the correct gear, equipment, and knowledge to do so properly. We have a proven process that will maximize effectiveness, while minimizing the interruption that your business suffers.

Water Damage To Hardwood Flooring

2/8/2022 (Permalink)

Many homes and businesses in Greenwich have hardwood floors throughout their space.  When it is well maintained, hardwood floors are a great option that both look good and last for a long time. That being said, they are susceptible to damage from water, especially if not remediated properly.

Mold - Hardwood floors can be porous, and also have spaces between the boards where water can get into and leave moisture.  This moisture can lead to mold down the road if the water is not adequately dried early.

Cupping - When a hardwood floor is heavily damaged, the moisture can lead to the boards warping and cupping, changing the shape. This both looks and feels suboptimal.

Cracking - You may be tempted to dry the water out yourself.  But wood floors must be dried at the right temperature, and at the right speed.  If these conditions are not met, the wood can crack due to changing shape too quickly.

Properly remediating water damage to a hardwood floor is a job for a professional, and can be easily botched if not done right the first time.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. The Value of 24/7 Service

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

No matter the cause, property damage can happen, regardless of how much we’ve prepared.  And property damage can happen at any time.

Often, the time between the initial damage and when remediation begins can determine the extent of damage that occurs.  If you have water damage, the longer the water sits, the longer the water has to soak into walls and flooring.  If you have fire or smoke damage, the longer the odor has to permeate porous surfaces in your home or business.

That’s why SERVPRO of Greenwich offers service at any hour of the day, every day of the week.  We have people available to answer your call, and technicians on call, ready to respond to your location quickly.  We start remediation as soon as possible to limit the amount of damage that you end up with.

As you have learned, it is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any property damage. SERVPRO of Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property, whether at their home or business.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

What To Do After A Storm Damage

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Whenever a storm hits, there is always the chance for property damage.  This can happen at any time, and can cause immense damage to your home or business.  Rain can cause water damage, wind can cause structural damage, and the list goes on.  When a storm-related disaster strikes, it can be overwhelming, but there are steps that you can take to make the restoration process more manageable.

Take Pictures

Document that damage as quickly and safely as possible. Obviously, if your safety is in jeopardy, prioritize that first.  Any documentation will help the next step go more efficiently.

Call Your Insurance Company

Call your insurance carrier and let them know what has happened.  They will advise you of your coverage and give you a claim number.

Call A Professional

Contact a company that specializes in remediating storm damage.  They will be able to assess the damage, and get to work to fix the damage.

Insulate Your Pipes Before It Is Too Late

1/31/2022 (Permalink)

When frozen pipes burst, the resulting water damage can be devastating. It can destroy belongings and furniture, as well as threaten the structure of your home.  Preventing pipes from freezing in the first place is the first line of defense against this type of water damage. Insulating your pipes is a good method to prevent frozen pipes when temperatures increase freezing risk.

To minimize heat loss and prevent frozen pipes in areas exposed to cold air, you can insulate your water pipes to be more resistant to temperature change. The important pipes to focus on are those that are more exposed to different temperatures, like those found in your attic, garage, or against exterior walls.

You can either have a professional like a plumber install insulation, or you can do the project yourself.  If you plan on insulating the pipes yourself, you just need to purchase insulation material that fits the length and diameter of any pipe that you want done.  Follow the instructions for installation, and you should be more protected from frozen and burst pipes than before.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. Freezing Pipes And Appliances

1/27/2022 (Permalink)

Cold weather, like the temperatures that we are currently facing, can quickly cause pipes to burst in homes throughout Fairfield County.  These types of water damages can cause major damage, with hundreds of gallons of water flowing into your home.  But not every water damage is a catastrophe that causes tens of thousands of dollars in damage.  However, that doesn’t mean that even a “minor” water damage won't be a major inconvenience.

We recently responded to a home in Greenwich that had one such water damage, where their washing machine had overflowed and spilled out into their finished basement. Upon inspection, we found that the hose that flowed away from the washer was frozen, so the machine could not drain at all.  Unfortunately, the washing machine was irreparably broken, and had to be replaced.  This type of damage could happen to any appliance where water is involved, such as a dishwasher.

Keep your home warm enough so that water temperatures do not dip below freezing.  YOu can also install insulation around pipes to keep them warmer.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any damage. SERVPRO of Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had any water damage to their property.  If you have any type of property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Commercial Contents Services

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

No matter how diligent or careful you are, sometimes events occur that are out of your control.  When these events happen and cause damage to your commercial property, there are many components to restoring your business to preloss condition.  These steps remain relatively constant, regardless of what caused the initial damage.

Fixing the original damage is the first part, while taking steps to prevent secondary damage is another step that needs to be taken.  One piece of the remediation process that is often overlooked is contents storage and restoration.

For example, if you have water damage at your business, you may have files and furniture that is affected.  Our technicians will save as much of the contents as possible and package them up.  We will bring them back to our warehouse for any possible restoration, and for storage while the on-site restoration occurs.  If you have a fire, we will bring any salvageable contents back to our warehouse to deodorize them, and then store them until your business is ready to be opened again.

Holiday Cooking Fires

12/7/2021 (Permalink)

With the winter holidays rapidly approaching, everyone will be starting their food preparations.  As we mention every year, this time period is the busiest time for home cooking fires of the year.  Not only do the number of fires increase, but the value of property that is damaged goes up, as well as the number of injuries.  There are simple ways to make sure you, your family, and your belongings stay safe this year.

  • Make sure that all smoke alarms (especially those near the kitchen) are in working order.  Replace any and all batteries that need changing.
  • Wear only clothes that will not dangle near open flame or heat sources.
  • Stay in the kitchen. Temporarily turn off the oven or stove until you return.
  • Set an alarm to turn off any heat-generating appliances.
  • Keep children and animals a safe distance from the cooking area.
  • Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all stoves, ovens, and small appliances are turned off.

Are You Ready For Wind Damage?

8/11/2021 (Permalink)

Compared to other parts of the country, Fairfield County sees less wind damage than others. But that means that many people are less prepared for it when it does actually happen.  We have already experienced heavy winds and storms this season, and seen the effects that wind damage can have, especially for those who are underprepared.  Strong wind can cause direct damage to your home or business, or can cause objects to fly into your building, causing damage that way.

Thunderstorms vs. Hurricanes And Tornadoes

Commonly, wind damage occurs during a thunderstorm.  Winds during this type of storm can loosen shingles, loosen siding, and cause smaller objects to collide with your home or business.  The damage that happens during hurricane or tornado conditions is similar, but can happen to a greater degree, causing more significant destruction.  Shingles and siding can become dislodged and ripped away.  Larger items can be moved by the wind’s force, causing structural damage if any object hits your home or business.

Prevent Wind And Storm Damage

If you know that any storm is coming, inspect your roof for any shingles that are loose already.  The same can be said for your siding.   Additionally, and most importantly, move any loose objects that could be thrown into your home away from the structure.

It is important to contact a storm damage restoration professional as soon as the storm is over to help limit and remediate the damage. SERVPRO of Greenwich has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had wind damage to their property.  If you have any type of storm damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Summer storms can wreak havoc on both small and large businesses alike.  Wind, lightning, and water can cause massive amounts of damage.  Being ready, and taking some simple steps can greatly reduce the amount of damage that your business takes.  You can also keep your employees safe by using these same steps.

Emergency Planning

Planning can take many forms, both for safety and damage mitigation.  Having a well documented and distributed emergency plan is essential.  For example, knowing where and when to shut off your building water main can prevent excess fooding.  One of these plans can be accomplished in-house, or through a SERVPRO of Greenwich Emergency Readiness Profile.

Waterproofing Your Business

Make sure your roof is free of leaks.  Have it routinely checked for weak spots and areas that may be compromised. Do the same if your business has a basement.  Any areas in the foundation that could let water in should be addressed.  Also make sure that any sump pumps are in working order.  If a heavy storm does occur, make sure that any sensitive items are sheltered away from as much water as possible.

Being Aware Of Your Coverage

Insurance policies vary from policy to policy.  Read yours over carefully to see what you are and are not covered for.  If you see an area that you believe needs addressing, speak to your carrier to make any necessary changes if possible.

Sometimes water damage can occur, even when we are on top of being prepared.  In this case, call SERVPRO of Greenwich.  We have extensive experience and will take care of you and your property.  We work with your insurance company, and are available 24/7 to help.

Customer Satisfaction After Successful Mold Remediation

5/20/2021 (Permalink)

A couple weeks ago, SERVPRO of Greenwich was contacted by a homeowner who suspected that they had mold in their house.  After a mold test confirmed their suspicions, we sent technicians to remediate the damage.

We found mold throughout the customer’s basement.  Spores had grown inside the walls and behind some of the appliances.  We removed any visible mold, and then sprayed antibacterial solution to ensure that no mold would grow back in the affected area. After the job was done, the customer took some time to write us to let us know how we did:

“Hi Emilio--  Writing to let you know that there were NO mold spores detected in the most recent air sample test in the basement...  THANK YOU for a job well done!!”

How Much Mold Does SERVPRO of Greenwich Remove?

3/25/2021 (Permalink)

When you positively identify that you have mold in your home or business, you will probably be motivated to get the issue fixed as soon as possible. There are many companies who offer mold remediation services.  But choosing the right one is important.  It can mean the difference between a good and bad job being done.

First of all, you need to understand that mold is natural, and occurs in small amounts in many environments. The issue is caused when conditions are optimal, and the amount of mold grows rapidly and abundantly. Beware of companies that say that they will remove 100% of mold spores in your home or business, as this is impossible.

SERVPRO of Greenwich does not guarantee complete elimination of spores, but rather returns the level to one that is acceptable and safe for humans.SERVPRO uses remediation methods that are tailored to the unique situation, such as type of surface and environment.  A step that SERVPRO of Greenwich takes is identifying and correcting a moisture issue that may be causing mold growth.

Next, we remove any porous material that is affected and replace it with brand new material, such as drywall.  Any non-porous surface that can be salvaged is cleaned with safe solutions that eliminate excess mold spores.  Any structural damage that has occurred due to mold is corrected as well.

We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your commercial or residential mold remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Greenwich should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

Response Time Is A Must

3/24/2021 (Permalink)

Picture this: You have just suffered major water damage at your home or business.  The water that poured out stemmed from a burst pipe, which you have just had fixed.  Now that the leak is solved, you need to deal with the standing water that is affecting one or more floors in your structure.  The longer the water sits, the more damage it is doing, by soaking into walls, the frame, floors, and furniture. In this scenario, the sooner the water is removed, the better.

SERVPRO of Greenwich prides itself on our response time.  We achieve this in two ways

First, our phone lines are open 24/7. No matter what time disaster strikes, we will be available to talk to you.

Second, we have strategically located our office and warehouse centrally in Fairfield County, so that our time to be on scene is short. Once our technicians have mobilized, we can be anywhere in the county in 20 minutes.

We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your commercial or residential disaster recovery needs.  And we’ll be on scene fast! That’s why SERVPRO of Greenwich should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

What Is Ozone?

3/24/2021 (Permalink)

And why does SERVPRO of Greenwich use it?

If you are like most people, you have heard of ozone when it is mentioned in conversations about global warming and climate change.  The ozone layer around the planet absorbs most of the UV rays that the sun emits.  But it has other uses closer to home, and SERVPRO of Greenwich utilizes it in some fire damage restorations.

After a fire, there will always be smoke and soot smells that are just as much a part of the overall damage, beyond any structural damage the flames have caused.  We need to get rid of these smells to successfully remediate fire damage.  Ozone is naturally produced in the environment, and naturally works to eliminate odors outdoors.  With three oxygen atoms in each molecule, rather than the two oxygen atoms in the air we breathe, ozone is unstable, so the extra oxygen atom can detach and grab onto odor polluting molecules to change their molecular composition.

So SERVPRO uses it to eliminate odors indoors, where ozone levels are much lower than outside. We use machines that emit ozone that works just like it does in nature. It seeks out odor-causing molecules and eliminates them.

We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your commercial or residential odor elimination needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Greenwich should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

Dealing With Insurance After Storm Damage

3/17/2021 (Permalink)

There is bound to be springtime storms in the near future, as the weather warms up in Fairfield County.  Storms can be mild, but storms can also bring severe damage, especially during the spring months.  Fallen trees, broken glass, and flooding are all things that can affect your home or business as a result of storm damage. If any one of these happen to you, getting back to normal will be your main concern.  Filing an insurance claim is probably part of that process.  Learn the best way to navigate that process below.

Inspect damage

Make your way around your property to see what damage has occurred.  Look at your roof, walls, basement, and surrounding areas.  Look for structural damage and water damage, as those are the most common ways storm damage affects people.  This will also help you when you speak to your insurance company, as you will know the answers they are looking for.

Document damage

When you are looking around your property for damage, make sure to take photos of everything that you find.  This will serve as proof of damage, as well as help your claim be processed quickly and easily.

Call Your Insurance Company

Make contact to inform them of the damage.  They will begin the claims process with you.  They may send out an adjuster to inspect the damage and issue a payment.  Having the photos will help immensely in this process.

SERVPRO Removes Fire Damage Odors from Greenwich Properties

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

After a fire, there may be serious odors left behind. This is because soot and smoke particles do an excellent job of settling inside porous material around your home or business. Clothing, furniture, and carpeting are all very susceptible to this odor damage.  Beyond that, ductwork and central air systems can have these same particles inside, especially if they were running at the time of the fire.  SERVPRO of Greenwich has abundant experience in remediation of these odors.

We use tools that are safe and EPA rated to remove soot and odors.

Deodorizers that are sprayed or fogged that eliminate fire odors.

Cleaning solutions that are safe and work well to abate odors.

Abrasive methods, like scrubbing and washing affected surfaces.

HEPA filter air scrubbers work like vacuums by pulling in affected air, and removing soot particles.

We can also seal in any lingering odors, so that they won’t return in the future.

SERVPRO of Greenwich is experienced and certified to administer fire remediation services, including  debris removal, odor removal, and structural restoration. Even a small fire can mean serious damage to your home or business.  After a fire in your home or business, SERVPRO of Greenwich has the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your remediation needs.  That’s why we should be your first call. Water Damage In Greenwich Commercial Storeroom

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

Recently, SERVPRO of Greenwich received a call from the store manager of a sunglasses retailer in Greenwich.  A pipe leak caused water to pool on the floor of the storage area where stock was being kept.  We responded within an hour, and began to remediate the damage.

First, we moved the affected products to another location, so the entire storeroom was available to be remediated.  Then, using water extractors and mops, we removed the standing water from the area.  Once, all pooled water was removed, we set up an array of air movers and dehumidifiers to thoroughly dry the area, including floors and lower walls.  The final step was to remove the stored items from wet cardboard boxes, and transfer them into new, dry boxes.

Much to the store manager’s surprise, she did not even have to close the store.  We were able to do our job quickly and efficiently with no business interruption.

Seasonal Spring Storm Damage

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

A quick gust of nor'easter wind can rip shingles and other roofing clean off in just a few moments. Exposed roofing can quickly lead to a ton of damage.  This occurs because water is able to pour into any compromised areas, and begin to cause damage inside the home or business. Most of this damage is visible, but can also just as easily be harder to detect. If water is able to trickle into even the smallest hole, water damage can accumulate.

If the damage is not noticed right away, structural damage and mold can happen relatively quickly.  This can present a few safety issues.  If mold has developed, it can cause adverse health effects.  If structural damage has developed, you need to have the affected elements replaced as soon as possible.  In addition, the longer the damage has lingered, the costlier it may be for you to remediate.

Which Fire Extinguisher Is Right For You?

3/11/2021 (Permalink)

Hint: You should have the one that fits your environment.

Homeowners and business owners in Greenwich want to keep their property safe in the event of a fire.  The key to preventing damage is being prepared.  This means having a plan.  A crucial part of a fire safety plan is having a fire extinguisher, knowing where it is, and knowing how to use it.  Depending on what you will probably be using it for, there are a few options that you should look at.

Types of Extinguishers:

Class A: freely burning, combustible solid materials such as wood or paper

Class B: flammable liquid or gas

Class C: energized electrical fire (energized electrical source serves as the ignitor of a class A or B fire – if electrical source is removed, it is no longer a class C fire)

Class D: metallic fire (titanium, zirconium, magnesium, sodium)

Class K: cooking fires – animal or vegetable oils or fats

For most people, the best to have around the home are Class A or Class B. These types cover most of the fires that would occur in a home or business setting.  These are best for furniture, carpets, drapes, and other common items.  Class D and K are more specialized options.  For instance, Class K is common in commercial kitchens where cooking fires have a higher probability of occurring.  If you cook a lot at home, you can absolutely invest in one of these as well.

Even a small fire can mean serious damage to your home or business.  After a fire in your home or business, SERVPRO of Greenwich has the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your commercial damage remediation needs.  That’s why we should be your first call. How Will Your Business Fare In An Emergency?

3/8/2021 (Permalink)

As a member of the Large Loss Team, SERVPRO of Greenwich is ready for anything.

When a business faces emergency damage, their ability to navigate the issue is usually a direct result of how they prepared.  If a business takes the threat of water or fire damage seriously before it happens, they often are able to come out the other side in a smoother fashion.  This is compared to a business that didn't care to prepare.

So how do you prepare for damage before it happens?

To prepare for a potential fire, make sure your extinguishers are in working order.  They expire after a while, and may not function properly when you need them the most.  If your business has a sprinkler system, have it inspected regularly to ensure its effectiveness and readiness.

A great step to take is to have a SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan set up before damage occurs.  This plan allows SERVPRO of Greenwich to have prior knowledge of your business.  In the event of an emergency, we are able to respond quicker and more effectively, which minimizes the amount of damage, and make the remediation go more smoothly.

Water Damage After A Fire Is A Real Thing

3/8/2021 (Permalink)

Everyone dreads a fire in their home or business; beyond the safety concerns, it can lead to costly repairs and damage that can keep you out of your space for weeks, or even months.  Fire damage can cause horrible odors, severe discoloration, and obviously, serious structural damage.

But what many people don't know is that the damage from a fire only starts there.  If the fire department is called, they will be using a lot of water to extinguish the flames.  Unfortunately, they will do whatever needs to be done to put the fire out.  Because of this, once the fire is out, your home or business will likely have suffered serious water damage on top of the fire damage.  If the water is not extracted and properly dried out, it can lead to secondary damage, such as mold growth.

That’s where SERVPRO of Greenwich comes in.  We not only remediate the fire damage, but will also fix any water or mold growth resulting from fire fighting efforts.  We can even fix structural damage, whether it was from the fire, or from firefighters using axes to fight the blaze.

We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your water remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Greenwich should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

Storm Damage In Greenwich Apartment Buildings

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

Restoring any storm damage presents unique challenges.  But when an apartment building or condo complex suffers storm-related water damage, a whole new set of hurdles occurs.  One such hurdle is mitigating damage that happens along a wall or roof that affects multiple units.

When two or more units share a common wall or roof, as do many apartments and condos in Greenwich, damage remediation can become much tougher. If water damage occurs in one apartment, it may flow into another apartment.  It may also soak the interior of a shared wall.  In both cases, the initial party thinks the water has subsided.  In the latter situation, the initial party thinks the water is gone, and the second party is unaware that water damage has affected them.

But fear not! SERVPRO of Greenwich has you covered in this situation.  We have the tools to get the job done right.  We have small portable fans and dehumidifiers that can fit in small spaces, as well as dry the interior of any shared walls that may be affected.  Our skilled technicians are also trained in the use of thermal cameras that can show any areas of moisture that cannot be seen by the naked eye.

Practice Safety When Flooding Damages Your Greenwich Home

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage from flooding is one potential emergency that can cause serious issues. If you do not act fast, your property and belongings could be irreversibly damaged.  But it is just as important to be safe when you are navigating the remediation process, especially in the initial phase.

Once flood damage occurs, the safety hazards multiply.  You must be careful when navigating your home after the damage occurs.  Look out for the following types of issues to keep you and your family safe.

Structural Damage

When building materials like drywall or flooring come into contact with a lot of water, they can shift, warp, and degrade.  Use caution when moving about your home, as walls and floors may be weaker than they appear. Having a professional inspect the foundation and frame for damage is a great option if you suspect anything may be wrong.

Electrical Damage

Every home has numerous wires that run to lights, outlets, and appliances.  When any water touches them, they become very dangerous.  If you have water damage, you should turn off the main power, to eliminate the risk of electrocution.

Contamination

Depending on where the water came in from, the water could be contaminated with bacteria and other harmful things.  Make sure that you stay away from any water that may carry any pollution.

When your Greenwich home has flood damage, it is crucial to find a local company like SERVPRO to assist you.  We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your residential or commercial water damage remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Greenwich should be your first call. Electric Surge Fires

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

Fire can happen suddenly in your Greenwich homes, and can be caused by many things.  One potential source of a fire that is not top of mind is through an electrical surge. A surge occurs when there is a sudden spike in the electrical current, which generally lasts only for a few seconds.  Even though the duration is not long, it is long enough to ruin electronics and appliances connected to an outlet.  In more severe cases, it can even start a fire.

Fires resulting from surges in power can originate from a few different sources:

Bad Wiring - Old or faulty wiring may not be able to withstand the extra energy that a surge produces.  Whether from bad installation or age, this situation can lead to sparking or shorting that could ignite a fire.

High-Powered Devices Turning On - The extra power that a major appliance draws when it starts up can cause a fire-starting surge.

Lightning - Beyond ruining your electronics, a lightning strike can cause enough surge to spark a fire.

You can and should invest in a couple surge protectors for your home or business.  These can protect you and your belongings against electrical surges and fires caused by them.

When your Greenwich home has fire damage, it is crucial to find a local company like SERVPRO to assist you.  We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your residential or commercial water damage remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Greenwich should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

Electrical Charger Fires

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

Practically everyone owns a cellphone by now.  In every Greenwich household, there is at least one phone, if not four or five.  So we all know the feeling of looking at your phone and being shocked that you have less than 20% battery left.  But sometimes, charging your phone can be the cause of some pretty serious fire damage.

Phone chargers produce a lot of energy, and when not properly used, can cause a fire to start.  Here are the reasons why:

  • People use third party chargers that may be of less quality, thus are more apt for shorts and other issues.  These chargers are prone to physical defects.  Only use high quality chargers in your home.
  • People attempt to use a charger that is not designed for their phone.  The difference in connection can cause sparks or excess heat.
  • People charge their devices in close proximity to flammable materials like drapes, sheets, or clothing.  These materials can quickly catch fire from heat that is put off by the charger.

Fire damage can strike your home or business without any notice.  SERVPRO of Greenwich is ready to respond at a moment's notice.  If you have any amount of fire damage, give us a call at 203.324.1642.

Hazards Of Soot Exposure

2/23/2021 (Permalink)

Soot doesn't just look bad.

Health and safety hazards from a fire do not always end when the flames are extinguished. Subsequent to the occurrence of a fire, many Greenwich property owners may figure they can save money by cleaning up the mess themselves. Aside from soot being very hard to clean properly without the proper tools, exposure to soot particles can be harmful.

Soot is made up of fine carbon particles that are put into the air during a fire.  These particles derive their composition from the source of the fire, so they can be made up of coal, wood, plastic, and gasoline.  While soot is extremely evident when it adheres to surfaces, airborne particles are almost invisible.  This makes for easy ingestion and inhalation.  When these fine particles are introduced to the body, they can cause health effects.

SERVPRO of Greenwich has the knowledge and specialized tools to remove soot damage from your home or business properly.  We know how to ventilate the area adequately, and remove unsightly and harmful soot particles.  If you have any fire or soot damage, please call us to get the remediation started.  We are available 24/7 to help.

2/10/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Greenwich recently responded to a water damage in a corporate office building.  One of the offices had a burst pipe that flooded a large portion of their space.  A number of offices were affected, along with the mailroom. To their credit, they acted fast, both by turning off the water main and by calling us to start remediation as soon as the problem was identified.

Within 24 Hours

  • Hardwood begins to warp and may even fracture
  • Sheetrock walls and ceilings start to disintegrate
  • Mold spores start to develop

Within Five Days

  • Microbial spores develop more rapidly, especially under warm conditions
  • Wood in furniture, floors, and walls become unsaveable from permanent warping and cupping
  • Walls and ceilings begin to fall apart

Beyond Seven Days

  • Structural integrity become a serious issue
  • Mold growth can now present a health hazard
  • The price to fully remediate goes up

Now you know that time is of the essence when you experience water damage at your business. Protect your business by calling SERVPRO of Greenwich. You can reach us at 203.324.1642 at any time for immediate assistance.

What Is Secondary Winter Water Damage?

2/1/2021 (Permalink)

When a pipe bursts in your home or business, the water soaks every material that it comes into contact with.  That could be anything from drywall and carpeting, to insulation, or furniture.  Many people are tempted to attempt remediation on their own.  They mop up all standing water and dry off surfaces to the touch.  But proper and complete remediation goes so much deeper.

Most people think of water damage, and assume that if things look and feel dry, that they are in the clear.  But this is not always the case.  If a proper level of dehumidification does not occur, moisture will linger in previously soaked material.  Over time, this can lead to a few serious issues.  First, an odor can arise that can be described as mildewy or stale.  But most serious is mold growth.  Especially if temperatures warm slightly, moisture in the structure can be a perfect site for spores to grow.

If you have a burst pipe in your home or business, please do not try to fix the problem on your own.  Call a professional remediation company like SERVPRO of Greenwich.  We’ll make sure that the job is done right, and we’ll take the extra steps to ensure that you are not at risk of secondary damage due to winter weather.

Do You Have Hidden Water Damage?

1/27/2021 (Permalink)

When water damage is evident, it is easy to identify.  This could be inches of flooding in your basement, or water coming out of your office’s ceiling.  When you see things like this, you know that you need help.  But water damage can be harder to see in some cases.  And when water damage goes unnoticed and untreated, it can lead to larger and more expensive repairs.  Just using your senses, you may be able to identify a problem. Read through these situations so that you are better equipped to notice signs of water damage that can signal an issue.

If you SEE strange coloring

Many materials that are common in homes and businesses can become discolored when exposed to prolonged contact with water.  When materials like drywall, ceiling tiles, or flooring become saturated, they tend to change colors.  For drywall or ceiling tiles, yellowing or darkening is common.  When hardwood floors become saturated, they will darken.  They may also tend to get misshapen.  If you see any of these signs, call a water remediation professional.

If you SMELL odors

We all know the smell.  Often described as “musty”, “stale”, or “mildewy”, these unpleasant odors are not only offensive to the nose, but can also be an indicator of water damage that we can’t see.  When materials in your home or business are exposed to water, mold can begin to grow.  The mold growth will almost always give off a foul scent, alerting us that there may be an issue. If you smell any of these signs, call a water remediation professional.

SERVPRO of Greenwich is available around the clock for homeowners and business owners who have any type of water damage.  We pride ourselves on our response time, experience, and professionalism.  If you have any water damage, big or small, don't hesitate to give us a call.

Is Your Business Prepared For Winter Storms?

1/22/2021 (Permalink)

While Fairfield County has experienced somewhat of a mild winter, a winter storm can still happen at any time.  A winter storm can cause damage of many kinds.  Freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and ice buildup are all things that can wreak havoc on your business.  But you can prepare beforehand to minimize the damage that you and your business are susceptible to.  Use the following tips to be prepared:

  • Inspect your business for potential areas that could allow water in, such as damaged roofing and cluttered gutters.
  • Make sure walkways are free of ice.  Have de-icer on hand to melt away any buildup.
  • After a storm, inspect the building for tree branches.  If large enough, they can cause roof damage that may need to be repaired.  A damaged roof can let water in, causing further damage.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Greenwich about starting an Emergency Readiness Plan for your business.  This allows us to respond as quickly as possible, limiting damage and getting you back in business as soon as possible.

Obviously, not all damage to your business can be prevented.  In more serious cases, you may need to rely on a professional for help.  SERVPRO of Greenwich can respond immediately to winter storm and water damage. If you have any winter-related damage to your business, please call us at 203.324.1642.  We are available to help 24/7.

What To Do About Cigarette Smoke or Odor

12/4/2020 (Permalink)

Eliminating the smell of tobacco smoke and nicotine can be a troublesome assignment. There are many mistakes that people think about how to clean smoke and odor from cigarettes. The final outcome is also contingent upon a wide assortment of elements. Numerous expert cleaning organizations will completely avoid cigarette smoke and odor jobs. But with our specialized tools and industry-leading knowledge, SERVPRO of Greenwich can make drastic changes in your home or business.

Everyone knows the odor that cigarettes leave. Once the tobacco has subsided, the scent that cigarettes are known for remains. Nicotine molecules are incredibly small, so they will penetrate almost any surface.  This can be anything from walls, ceilings, and furniture. Many people have an adverse reaction to this smell, and want it removed from their homes.

Besides offending our sense of smell, cigarettes can leave visual stains, leaving otherwise clean surfaces with a yellow or brown color.  Again, due to the particle size, this coloring will adhere to every surface and is incredibly difficult to remove with household cleaners. Odors may also be lingering in vents that will need to be cleaned by a professional.

How does SERVPRO of Greenwich clean cigarette damage?

With many of the jobs that we do, we are remediating damage based on one event such as a fire or water damage.  The first step is making sure that no additional nicotine molecules will be released in the area.

Our team uses a few methods with this type of damage.  First, all structural surfaces must be washed with our safe, but industrial strength cleaning products.  Next, items like furniture and carpets must be removed.  We then have a few options based on the severity of the damage.  We can use a fogger or ozone machine to remove most of the odor.  These methods will also reach the vents and air ducts that traditional methods will not.  The last step is to apply a sealer that traps the odorous nicotine molecules in, where they cannot be smelled.

CDC and EPA Guidelines

Along with our methods, the products that we use are also recommended by the CDC, and have the EPA-approved pathogen rating.  Also important, many of the products that we use are safe and green, protecting you and your business from harmful chemicals that other cleaners may use.

How We Handle Upholstered Furniture That Is Damaged In A Flood

8/3/2020 (Permalink)

Our technicians clean your upholstery using situation-specific methods to get the best results.

Flooding can affect the structure of your Greenwich home as well as items on the interior, like furniture, appliances, and documents.  Every flood caused by a storm is unique, and it is very important to rely on a professional company to effectively remediate the damage.  If not done properly, this can lead to harmful mold growth down the road.  It can also cause the long-term degradation of expensive items in the home.

SERVPRO of Greenwich Uses Extra Precautions for Heavily Soiled Areas

In Greenwich, storm waters are sometimes labeled “Category 3”, which means that water is contaminated with bacteria from the air and ground. When it comes to furniture, upholstered pieces often need extra care to ensure proper cleaning.  Our technicians are experts in carefully remediating damage to high-value items when regular cleaning is either not enough, or too invasive for the material.

How do we accomplish this?

  • We protect both your floors and others contents in your home by isolating each piece of upholstered furniture on a cloth.
  • We then vibrate the surface to encourage dirt to the surface where it can be more effectively removed.
  • Our technicians will then clean the surface of the furniture..
  • We will then use a furniture-safe cleaning solution to deep clean each piece.
  • Finally, we extract the shampoo, which leaves the furniture free of dirt, and in preloss condition.
  • The furniture is then allowed to dry completely, a process that is monitored by our team to ensure proper moisture levels.

For 24/7 assistance after a flood, contact SERVPRO of Greenwich at (203) 342-1642. We make it "Like it never even happened."

Water extraction must be started immediately. SERVPRO of Greenwich uses specialized equipment like wet-vacs, high-speed fans and commercial-grade dehumidifiers to extricate the water and dampness rapidly, drying the area.

Smoke Damage Remediation

The smoke harm that comes from a fire can be substantial. Actually, the smoke and soot residue can get into your walls, floors, and other porous material like fabric. When left, this residue can stay in your property for a considerable length of time, causing discoloration and foul odors. The removal of these particles requires unique equipment and techniques to effectively be removed.

Restoration And Remediation Of Personal Property

In numerous cases, those who try to finish the remediation procedure on their own will discard things that are salvageable. Try not to commit this error. Rather, let SERVPRO of Greenwich help you with this part of the remediation. Our specialists will identify the items that we can actually clean and restore.  Those items will be taken back to our facility and cleaned.

SERVPRO of Greenwich is energetic about crisis readiness and individual well being regardless of the circumstance. This extends beyond fire, water, and mold. You always hear about how to prepare for a disaster in your home, but do you know what you should have in your vehicle in case of an emergency? The National Safety Council suggests a variety of things to keep in your vehicle. Each vehicle ought to have a crisis supply pack in the storage compartment. Here are a few things you ought to have on hand:

  • A spare tire and tire changing tools
  • Jumper cables
  • Multitool
  • A flashlight and extra batteries
  • A first aid kit, which should be checked for expired supplies on a regular basis
  • Food that won't spoil
  • Water
  • Rain jacket

Having these items in case of an emergency can make a huge difference.  It could make a roadside emergency more comfortable, as well as keep you safe from the elements and injury.

High Humidity Can Cause Low Level Water Damage

3/13/2020 (Permalink)

When relative humidity is excessively high in Greenwich, stagnant moisture can lead to water damage.

Exceptionally high humidity in your home in Greenwich could mean water remediation services are needed. Relative humidity in most American homes varies, but generally stays in a safe zone.  This goes from absolute dryness to 40% relative humidity. There are many causes for high moisture levels in a home, from environmental changes to bad ventilation. In the event that your home feels sticky or moist, and can tell that the humidity level is higher than normal, your home and the items in it could suffer water damage.

Additionally, if the condition linger, secondary damage like mold growth and foul odors can result.

SERVPRO of Greenwich gives quick and economical dehumidification administrations if dampness is the main issue in your home, just as intensive checks to ensure there are no different sorts of harm in the structure.

What Can Be Damaged In A Greenwich Flood?

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

While considering flooding isn't nice to think about, it is something that all property holders ought to prepare for because of how frequent it has become lately.

There are numerous reasons for flooding just as numerous harms a flood can cause. To give you a thought of the most widely recognized harms to know about, we have assembled this guide so you can be more ready. Read to see the various ways a flood can damage your home or business.

Brief Frame Expansion - The frame of your house or business is generally made out of wood, which means it won't generally need extraction after a flood. While the wood may expand at first, it should return to its original state, and fundamentally sound. Be that as it may, work with an expert to guarantee it is treated for mold.

Damaged Appliances - Many household appliances sit on the ground, which makes them extremely susceptible to flood and water damage.  Appliances that use insulation, such as your refrigerator, are extra prone to damage, and may need to be replaced following a flood.

Furniture Damage - If you have furniture that is made of metal or wood, you may be safe after a flood.  These materials are more resilient against water damage, and may be recovered. If you have carpeting, or items with upholstery, these items may need to be replaced.  This is due to their nature to retain moisture and present a mold hazard.

If you suffer water damage as a result of a storm or flood, call SERVPRO of Greenwich today.

Fire Damage Deodorization by SERVPRO of Greenwich

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

Subsequent to any type of fire damage inside your Greenwich home or business, there are a few conditions that will affect you. One issue that almost always requires professional intervention is odor from smoke damage.

The sort of smoke put out by a fire will coat all surrounding surfaces. Smokes can be a thin powder as well as a thick greasy layer. Either way, the soot permeates the porous surfaces in the area.  The resulting odor is extremely hard to eliminate using household cleaning agents. In the event that the burst burns for quite a while, overwhelming smoke scents result, which stems from incompletely consumed particles that don't fully combust.

SERVPRO of Greenwich professionals can implement aeration techniques that will get rid of the odors. To begin, we spray a scent eliminating solution on any surfaces that are influenced by soot deposits. We use the latest techniques and specialized equipment to deodorize your space.  Once the smell is reduced to an acceptable level, we seal the surface to trap any remaining odors in.

Even the smallest fire may require the assistance of a professional remediation company. On the off chance that you ever happen to experience the ill effects of smoke or soot damage, call SERVPRO of Greenwich.

Two Reasons Why Your Sump Pump Could Fail

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

When you install a sump pump, you may take it for granted.  It is a vital piece of equipment that keeps your home or business dry.  A sump pump works by diverting groundwater and excess rainwater away from your foundation.  This prevents flooding and moisture in your basement. A sump pump is a complex machine that is made up of a variety of components.  If it malfunctions, and the pump fails to work, you are at significant risk for water damage. Here are two reasons that your sump pump could cease to work.

Loss Of Power

The most common reason that sump pumps fail is due to power loss.  This could be from your entire home losing power, or a fuse blowing for that circuit in your home. Sump pumps rarely run on a dedicated power source, so when the home loses power, the pump no longer does its job.  A backup generator connected to the pump can ensure that it will continue to function in a power outage. If your generator is gas-powered, remember to run the generator outside, and at a safe distance from the structure.

Pump Size Is Wrong

Sump pumps come in many different sizes to accommodate different situations.  Factors that determine what size pump you need range from the size of your basement, the level of groundwater present, and the potential risk for flooding. A pump that is too big will wear out faster, while a pump that is too small will struggle to handle the load that may occur.

If your home or business is affected by water damage, call SERVPRO of Greenwich.  We have over 30 years of experience remediating all types of water and moisture that may affect you.

Use A Surge Protector To Prevent Electrical Fires

3/10/2020 (Permalink)

Electrical fires are a real threat for both homes and businesses.  There are a number of causes that can turn your wires and extended electrical system into a fire hazard. One such cause is a power surge, which can easily start a fire.  A power surge is a spike in the electrical current which lasts a split second. It can damage appliances, and even cause a fire. Using a surge protector is a way to mitigate the risk of this happening to you.

A surge protector defends against possible voltage spikes that could damage your electronics, appliances, or equipment.  It does this by detecting a surge, and limiting the output of electrical current to your devices. It will keep the output below a safe threshold so your electronics are safe.  It will also keep the threat of an electrical fire due to a surge to a minimum.

If you have a fire due to an electrical power surge, call SERVPRO of Greenwich.  We are ready to respond to your home or business to begin the restoration process quickly.

3 Things You Need To Know About Commercial Water Damage

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

When your business is affected by any type of water damage, it is an upsetting time.  So many questions need to be answered, and you may not know what the outcome will be. Here are three important things about water damage that are crucial to know.

1. Response time is critical

When you suffer water damage, you need to act fast.  The longer water sits, the more it is able to soak floorboards, carpets, and walls, leading to longer restoration time. This can mean longer for your business to resume operations.

Additionally, when time passes, the threat of secondary damage in the form of mold growth drastically increases.  Mold spores thrive in the exact conditions that water damage provides, and can begin to grow as soon as 24 hours after initial damage.  The area needs to be dried quickly to reduce the possibility of the mold growing.

2. The pollution level of the water is important.

All water damages are not created equally. Water can come from a variety of sources, and that dictates what category it falls under, and how the remediation process unfolds.

Category 1 - This is water that originates from a clean source.  This could be from a sink overflow or a break in a water supply line.  This water presents no health risks on its own.

Category 2 - Known as “grey water,” water in this category can come from sources like a dirty toilet or sump pump failure.  This water may cause illness through human contact. Water that starts as Category 1 can become Category 2 through contact with other contaminated materials.

Category 3 - This is water that presents serious and immediate health risks to those who come into contact with it.  This includes, but not limited to sewage or groundwater. In this category, water may carry bacteria, heavy metals, or other organic toxins.  Stagnant Category 2 water can easily turn into Category 3 over time.

3. SERVPRO Of Greenwich Can Help

We have over 30 years of experience remediating all types of water damages in a commercial building.  Our skilled technicians utilize both the most effective techniques and specialized equipment to make sure that you are taken care of.  We will act fast to get your business back up and running as soon as possible.

Could Your Ice Maker Cause Water Damage?

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

Why Do Ice Makers Present Such A Threat?

An ice maker is a nice thing to have.  Never having to fill up ice trays is a luxury.  But your ice maker could be the cause of some costly damage that is hard to detect until it is too late.

Hundreds of gallons of water can leak out over time.  This can lead to a number of issues, which can range from rotting drywall, rotting flooring, and serious mold growth.  Because the issue is concealed behind your fridge, the damage may go undetected until it is too late. By the time you find the issue, you may have costly damage to repair.  There are steps to take to reduce the risk of this type of damage in your home or business.

  1. Replace the plastic tubing that connects the water source to your ice maker with copper tubing. This material is far less likely to become compromised by wear and tear over time.
  2. Install a battery-operated flood alarm. Not only useful for ice makers, these alarms can be placed by any potential source of water damage.  If it comes into contact with moisture, it will alert you.
  3. Regularly check behind your fridge for signs of water.  If you see any moisture, investigate further. If you find out that you do have water damage, call SERVPRO of Greenwich.

SERVPRO of Greenwich has decades of experience in the remediation and restoration of residential and commercial property after a water damage occurs. We have the knowledge and equipment to ensure that the job is done the right way the first time.

Using Drying Equipment To Remediate Storm Damage at SERVPRO of Greenwich

3/4/2020 (Permalink)

Spring and summer storms can cause significant water damage to your home or business.  This couples both initial and secondary damage as potential results. It is important to begin the remediation process immediately, as well as make sure that it is done properly the first time.  SERVPRO of Greenwich does both! We have specialized equipment, extensive training, and over 30 years of experience remediation storm damage. The specialized equipment that we use sets us apart, and gives us the ability to ensure that secondary damage like mold growth does not occur.  Here are some of the pieces of equipment that we use.

Moisture Sensors and Meters

These are used to find moisture in all types of flooring, subfloors, and also walls. A common misconception is that moisture is completely eliminated when remediating storm and water damage.  This is not true, as there is always moisture in the air. Moisture meters are used to find the numerical moisture level in any material. This allows our technicians to ensure that proper drying is happening, and the moisture level is returned to an acceptable level.

Thermal Imagers

When SERVPRO of Greenwich responds to storm-related water damage, we start by extracting all visible water.  Then we dry the area out using air movers and dehumidifiers. To ensure that all problem areas are taken care of, we use thermal imagers to detect moisture that is not seen by the naked eye.  When looking through the imager, a difference in heat can show where a difference in temperature exists. This often indicates residual moisture that needs to be focused on.

Renter’s Insurance & Fire Damage

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

As a renter, you probably know that it is important to have a policy to protect yourself and your belongings.  While you are not the owner of the building, you do own your possessions, and being able to replace them in the event of damage is important.  But what does renter’s insurance actually cover if you have a fire?

Renter’s insurance covers your things in the event of fire damage.  This pertains to fires that are a result of negligence by you or another party.  If you lose clothing, electronics, or anything else, the policy will cover the cost to replace these items.  Your landlord’s policy will cover the structure, which includes light fixtures, and other fixed items.

Your Temporary Housing Costs

If fire damage renders your apartment unlivable, you will need to live in a hotel until you can move back in.  Your renter’s insurance policy will cover those costs as well.

Your Medical And Legal Liability

If a fire occurs as a result of your own negligence, you may be liable for damages incurred by other tenants, whether it may be legal or medical.  Renter’s insurance will cover these costs up to a certain amount, based on the policy that you take out.

Home Damage Due To Falling Trees

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

We are transitioning from winter to spring.  With the changing weather, severe weather patterns become more probable.  A common occurrence, which is due to high winds, is falling trees. These trees can fall on your home, causing major damage.  You should not wait until it happens. Take some precautions to avoid this issue. Trees that are dead or dying can be especially susceptible to falling as a result of high winds and storms.  Safely remove these trees around your property, or get a tree removal service to do it for you.

  1. If a tree does happen to fall on your home or business, ensure that no one is injured.
  2. Call the police and fire department if you observe any loose or hanging power lines.  If you do see downed wires, use extreme caution when exiting the building.
  3. Inform your insurance company of the damage, and follow their instructions on how to file a claim.
  4. Reach out to SERVPRO of Greenwich for immediate assistance.  We have decades of experience, and are ready to respond faster to any size disaster.  We are available around the clock, and will send our experienced technicians to handle your storm damage needs.

Understanding the entirety of your homeowner policy may not be something that you have time to do.  In the event of a fire in your home, you are forced to turn to the policy for help. If you do not know the extent of your coverage, you may pay out of pocket for remediation services that are covered.  Remediation must be completed, but you may be fully or partially covered for these services.

They rely on that company to inspect the damage and determine the scope of work that needs to be done.  We provide our estimate directly to your insurance company to expedite and streamline the process.

Your insurance company will assign an adjuster to your claim.  We work directly with the adjuster to make sure that the restoration process begins as soon as possible.  This gets you back in your home in a speedy fashion. How Flood Damage Impacts Different Types of Flooring

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

Spring rainstorms can cause some flooding in buildings in Fairfield County. If your home or business suffers a damage, the type of flooring that is affected can greatly dictate how remediation is conducted.  Whether you have concrete or hardwood, water affects the area differently. Here is how water affects each type of flooring.

Hardwood

If your hardwood floor becomes saturated with water, the effects may be immediate.  Often, though, problems arise some time after the initial damage occurs. Moisture in the woods can cause the floorboards to warp, resulting in bowed and raised areas throughout.  SERVPRO of Greenwich has specialized equipment that is uniquely designed to extract moisture from hardwood flooring to ensure that this type of secondary damage does not happen.

Concrete

You may have painted concrete floors in places such as an unfinished basement or a garage.  Moisture in this setting can cause flaking or bubbling in the paint. More importantly, moisture can remain in the porous surface of the concrete.  This, in conjunction with dirt or dust, can create a great environment for mold growth. SERVPRO of Greenwich has commercial-grade air filters that can remove the airborne mold spores if they are present.

Vinyl or Linoleum

If your kitchen or bathroom has this type of floor covering, you can also have water damage here.  The glue that holds the material to the subfloor can become loosened or dissolved which detaches it. If moisture becomes trapped between the vinyl and the subfloor, it can lead to mold.  In this case, replacing the affected material is often more cost-effective than drying.

Depending on the type of floor and your unique circumstance, SERVPRO of Greenwich will tailor a restoration process for you.

Don't Try To Remediate Water Damage Yourself

2/27/2020 (Permalink)

For a homeowner, not many things are worse than finding water damage, no matter the size.  When the amount of water is on the smaller side, many people try to clean up by themselves.  Time is important when dealing with these issues, but doing it in the right way is equally crucial.  By not cleaning and drying in the right way, the situation can become worse, especially down the road.  Here are some common mistakes that homeowners make, so that you can know how to navigate the situation properly.

1. Not Doing It Right The First Time Around

The water damage, no matter the size, requires certain measures that homeowners often overlook.  For example, if the area is not properly ventilated while you attempt to dry, there may be lingering moisture left behind.  This can lead to secondary damage, which can take many forms. If moisture does remain, the issues that can result include mold growth, rotting drywall, and strong odors.

2. Putting Off Remediation

Especially when the water damage is on the small side, water in your home can present a real problem. Water immediately begins to seep into flooring, subfloor, and walls. Delaying the remediation can increase the likelihood that other issues will come your way.

3. Not Bringing In A Remediation Professional

Attempting to remediate the water damage yourself is no small feat.  Trying to do it quickly, and in the right way, can prove to be a serious task.  Often, special equipment and proper techniques are necessary to accomplish this.  Failing to successfully remediate the damage can lead to the issues mentioned above.  If you find yourself with any amount of water damage, please call SERVPRO of Greenwich.

What Are Drain Flies?

2/27/2020 (Permalink)

You may have noticed small flies around your kitchen sink or shower, and wondered where they came from.  You may have a very clean home or business, so their presence is strange. These flies are known as sewer flies, sink flies, and most commonly, drain flies. They thrive on stagnant, shallow water, typical of drains attached to sinks and showers.  They are especially fond of sinks, as there can be organic matter for them to feed on.

How To Locate The Source

If you suspect that you have these pests present in your home, there are ways to find out where they are coming from. In the evening, place tape over the drains in your home or business.  If the flies are originating from any of your drains, they will stick to the tape. This will show you what areas need to be addressed, as well as the extent of the issue.

How To Eliminate The Flies

With a deep clean, the issue may be resolved within a week.  Do a thorough cleaning of the problem area, whether it is yoru sink or shower.  You can also pour boiling water down the drain a couple times daily. This may work as well.  For a persisting issue, you can turn to drain cleaners such as Drano. This won't necessarily kill the flies, but will dissolve any organic matter that the flies may be feeding on.

Be Ready For Spring

2/26/2020 (Permalink)

We are only a matter of weeks away from spring! The spring season brings wonderful things like warmer weather and fresh grass.  It also comes with the potential for weather events consisting of heavy rain, high-speed winds, and flooding. These can all cause damage to your business.  There is time to take some precautions to protect yourself against these types of damages. Doing these things can mean that you are prepared for weather that spring can bring.

Springtime water damage can be prevented or lessened by:

  • Being aware of upcoming water-related weather patterns
  • Clearing storm drains to prevent backup
  • Inspecting your sump pump to ensure that it is working properly
  • Clearing your gutters of any debris such as leaves that has accumulated

Other things you can do to prevent property damage include:

  • Check your roof for cracked shingles and other weak points that could let water in
  • Make sure that any dead trees are taken down.  This will prevent structural damage from wind-blown trees that could fall down.
  • Assembling an emergency preparedness kit with items such as food, water, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.

SERVPRO of Greenwich is skilled in remediating many types of damage that occur as a result of a storm event.  If your business is affected by wind, water, or structural damage, please give us a call. We are available 24/7 to provide assistance.

Why Have An Emergency Readiness Program For Your Business?

2/26/2020 (Permalink)

Disasters strike businesses all the time.  Whether it be a fire or flood, an emergency like these can cause structural damage that can lead to business interruption.  Loss of revenue is common in these situations. Steps can be taken to reduce the damage that is caused by reducing the response time.

SERVPRO of Greenwich is always ready to respond when disaster affects your business, but we can also help you be prepared as well. With our Emergency Readiness Program (ERP), we put a plan in place in case of emergency. We work with you to identify areas of importance in your business, such as water and gas shutoffs, as well as emergency contact information.  We then compile all the information in a concise way within a document that you keep on file. It can also be viewed via your computer or tablet for immediate access.  We also keep a copy so that when we respond, our technicians know exactly where to go and who to call.

In the event of an emergency, a SERVPRO Emergency Readiness Program can reduce business interruption by providing a plan of action for you and your business. Having an ERP can save critical time when a fire or flood affects your business.  Contact SERVPRO of Greenwich today to begin the process of creating your plan, a service that we offer free of charge.

Commercial Generator Safety

2/26/2020 (Permalink)

A generator is a very helpful asset for any business, especially in the event of disaster.  In a flood, it can power a sump pump if there is a power outage. A generator can also keep vital appliances running under the same circumstances.  If you do have a generator for your business, follow some basic safety tips to ensure that it is being used efficiently and in a safe manner.

  • Refrain from using your generator in a fully or partially enclosed space.  This includes garages, offices, basement, and crawl spaces. Running a generator under these conditions can lead to carbon monoxide building up.  Especially dangerous due to the lack of odor, if inhaled, can lead to severe health effects and even death. Between 2005 and 2017, more than 900 people died as a result of generator-related carbon monoxide poisoning.  Make sure to properly ventilate any area that a generator is used in.
  • When a generator is used in a flood  or water-related situation, the risk of electrocution rises immensely.  If use is necessary, make sure to keep the generator dry. Use non-conductive material to elevate the machine above the water.
  • If you need to refuel the generator, let it cool down before putting more fuel in.  When hot, any spilled fuel can ignite, causing further damage to the business, as well as to the people in the vicinity.

Dry Smoke vs. Wet Smoke

2/24/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot damage left after a fire is foul-smelling, unsightly, and, because it can penetrate areas that are not visible, is harder to eliminate.  When a fire hits your home or business, there are actually two types of smoke and soot that can affect you. They are referred to as wet smoke and dry smoke.  Depending on which one your home or business suffers, there are different resulting soot and residue types as well. The restoration process is different based on the type of smoke and soot damage present.

Dry smoke occurs when a fire burns at a high heat, and results from materials like wood and paper igniting.  This type of fire and smoke represents many fires that happen in homes and businesses alike. The visible soot left behind is thin and powdery.

Wet smoke happens when materials such as plastic and rubber catching on fire.  The result is a fire that burns at low heat that smolders over time. This fire often has a much stronger odor and produces thicker and more voluminous smoke that coats rooms with a thick residue. This residue is much harder to clean than dry smoke residue.

As part of our inspection procedure, SERVPRO of Greenwich will test the soot to determine the type of smoke damage in your home or business.  Depending on what type of smoke damage you suffer, we will tailor the restoration process to your needs.

Using Thermal Imaging To Eliminate Moisture

1/30/2020 (Permalink)

View from a thermal imaging camera showing a spot of moisture. This image shows a possible moisture spot that may need to be addressed.

When we respond to a water damage, many times our skilled technicians are able to determine with the naked eye where problem areas of moisture exist.  But we pride ourselves on getting the job done right the first time, which eliminates the possibility of secondary damage such as lingering moisture and mold growth.

This is why we sometimes employ the use of thermal imaging to detect areas of moisture that are unnoticeable via eyesight.  When there is moisture present, the area will be a slightly different temperature than the surrounding material.  When scanning an area that has been affected by water with a thermal camera, any spots that differ in temperature are easily seen. Then our team can further investigate to determine if further action is necessary to properly remediate the damage.

SERVPRO of Greenwich uses thermal imaging cameras to make sure the job is done right the first time.  If you have water damage in your home or business, call us immediately.  We are available 24/7 to provide damage restoration.

Protect Your Home Against Groundwater

1/26/2020 (Permalink)

Person standing in large puddle Groundwater may not be covered by insurance.

As a homeowner, many people feel safe knowing that they have insurance protecting their home.  One common misconception is that all water damage is covered by their homeowner insurance.  Many policies will not cover water that landed on the ground, and subsequently flowed into the home.  This can include rainwater, river runoff, and drenched ground surrounding your home. If you are not sure that your policy covers groundwater, you can check with your carrier.  if you believe that you may be at risk for this type of damage, you can take action.  You may be able to purchase additional coverage on your homeowner policy, or purchase a separate flood insurance policy.

SERVPRO of Greenwich provides 24-hour emergency service and is dedicated to being faster to any-sized disaster. We can respond immediately to your emergency and have the expertise to handle your restoration or cleaning needs.

What To Do If You Have A Puffback

1/2/2020 (Permalink)

Now that we are officially in the winter season, homeowners will be turning to their heating systems more regularly.  One messy and potentially dangerous issue that can arise is a puffback.

A puffback happens when fuel vapors build up inside the equipment due to an improper ignition.  When ignition finally occurs, the excess fuel in the chamber causes the puffback. Depending on the amount of accumulated fuel, homeowners could see anything from minor soot damage to a more substantial explosion.  There are many factors that can lead to this, and vary based upon age of the system, whether it is gas or oil driven, as well as manually resetting the system too often in a short period of time.

When a puffback occurs, professional assistance is almost always a necessity. SERVPRO of Greenwich has the knowledge, experience, and skilled technicians to take care of difficult problems such as this. Since each puffback situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.

In the event of a puffback, or any fire, smoke or water emergency, SERVPRO of Greenwich is here to help.  We can be reached 24/7 at (203) 324-1642.

Christmas Tree Fires

12/5/2019 (Permalink)

The holiday season is a time that we get to spend time with loved ones, eat good food, and maybe open a present or two.  But there can be danger lurking in your own home during this joyous time.

Over 150 fires stemming from Christmas trees igniting are reported each year. These fires cause injuries, fatalities, and cause over 10 million dollars in property damage annually. 40% of these fires start in the living room, which can easily spread to other rooms in the house, quickly causing massive damage to the home.  Almost all of the reported Christmas tree fires happened in a home, but they can occur in a corporate setting as well. And because people are not always around to notice, the fire can cause an exponential amount of damage.

Following a few simple tips can dramatically reduce the risk of a Christmas tree fire this season.

  • DO NOT use candles to decorate your tree.  Furthermore, keep candles at least a few feet away from your tree.
  • Use a freshly cut tree.  The fresher the tree, the more water content it still has.
  • Water the tree daily. This will keep it saturated longer.  And as much as keeping your tree around is festive, the sooner you dispose of the tree the better.
  • Refrain from using branches from your tree in your fireplace.  They are highly combustible, and can lead to airborne embers.

Personal Protective Equipment Suits

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

What is PPE?

Personal Protective Equipment, which is generally abbreviated as "PPE", is worn to limit exposure to dangers in the environment when remediating damage. Exposure may result from contact with physical, synthetic, or biological contaminants. PPE may incorporate things, for example, shoes, gloves, security glasses, earplugs, respirators, hard caps, coveralls, and full bodysuits.

PPE limits the hazard to the individual’s wellbeing and security. Dangers will consistently be available, that is the reason the utilization of PPE is enhanced with control measures, especially in perilous work environments. SERVPRO of Greenwich uses both the equipment and control measures when dealing with potentially harmful conditions.

How PPE Used for Commercial Mold Remediation

The essential capacity of personal protective equipment is to restrict mold exposure.

In the event that a remediation occupation bothers the mold, and mold spores at that point become airborne, the danger of respiratory inhalation rises. But with a PPE suit, along with a respirator, our crews are protected from both inhalation effects and effects resulting from external contact.

Different Types of Storm Damage

8/3/2019 (Permalink)

Extreme storms can be terrifying and perilous, and wellbeing must be your first need. In the event that your town has seen serious issues, be cautious. In the event that you think your home has been fundamentally damaged or if flood hazard remains, don't go inside until an expert says it's protected. Putting in a couple of evenings at a companion's home or in a crisis haven is a little cost to pay.

Snow Storm Damage

Winter storms assault a significant part of the U.S. and Canada consistently, and zones that don't get hit with snow regularly manage ice storms and solidifying precipitation. When you're managing snowstorms, lake impact storms and snow squalls, damage to your home can incorporate rooftop and auxiliary damage from overwhelming snow just as damage to sash, outside funnels, and siding. These frigid storms regularly accompany high winds, which can fuel damage by making shingles loosen up. These storms can unleash destruction on utility lines.

At the point when ice storms hit, you may should be significantly more wary. These storms are described by leaving at any rate a fourth of an inch of ice on surfaces. They can make rooftops breakdown, trees to break and electrical cables to snap. Attempt to remain in your home until the ice storm has passed and prepared with food, water, supplies, and power sources.

Lightning and Thunderstorm Damage

Lightning storms can happen any place in the U.S., and they bring the danger of flames and extreme basic damage. Regardless of whether your lightning bars work appropriately by directing the vitality to the ground, it's conceivable to see damage to electrical wiring, machines, radio wires, satellite dishes, link or phone lines, and steel structure. Except if there are indications of flame, make certain to remain inside until the storm is over on the grounds that your home will secure you.

Thunderstorms accompany dangers regardless of whether you aren't hit by lightning. You could see flooding, hail, and high winds.

High Winds, Tornadoes and Hurricane Damage

High winds can happen for all intents and purposes anyplace, and thousands of tornadoes and hurricanes hit the U.S. consistently. Extreme winds are characterized as surpassing 50-60 mph. Damage from wind can be across the board and can influence your structure as well as encompassing landscaping and black-top. Know about the potential for falling trees and posts and damaged electrical cables, and deal with these issues immediately. After the storm, look at your property for basic damage to the home, including windows, siding, and rooftops. In the most extraordinary situations, rooftops can be passed clean over.

If you have any storm damage to your home or business, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Greenwich.

Why We Use State Of The Art Technology

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

When we are called to a water damage, it is essential to be able to rapidly determine the extent of water damage in a house or business.

Getting your home or business dry is crucial in the aftermath of water damage. With excess moisture, mold and mildew can develop and bacteria can multiply. That’s why SERVPRO of Greenwich uses moisture meters during and after completion of water remediation work to ensure that structures are properly dried.

Moisture meters can reach areas that may otherwise be overlooked or not considered as being affected by moisture. These include areas such as basement walls, spaces between layers of drywall, concrete subfloors, and beneath carpet and tile. Identifying potential damage to these lesser-suspected areas can save thousands of dollars in repairs later.

SERVPRO of Greenwich provides 24-hour emergency service and is dedicated to being faster to any-sized disaster. We can respond immediately to your emergency and have the expertise to handle your restoration or cleaning needs.

Spring Cleaning Season Is Here

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

Can you feel the air getting warmer?  Spring is just around the corner, a time when many people tackle the sometimes large chore of spring cleaning.  To some, this task can be a daunting one.  Maybe you don’t know where to start, or maybe you are having a hard time parting with some old items that are collecting dust on a shelf.

Here are a few quick tips to help you cleanse quickly and efficiently:

1.) Tackle one room per day - this allows you to not become overwhelmed.  Set small goals that are easily attainable and it wont feel like such a big undertaking.

2.) Part with old clothing - if you haven’t worn an item of clothing in a full year, maybe it’s time to let it go.  This can be a great way to free up closet and dresser space. This does not apply to items like suits and other special occasion outfits.

3.) Outsource what you don’t want to do yourself - The professional cleaners at SERVPRO of Greenwich can make quick work of carpets, walls, and any other deeper clean that you would rather not do.

Hole In The Roof

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can dramatically affect your home.  One thing that people don’t realize is that in order to properly extinguish a fire, the fire department often has to damage the home in the process.  Two measures that cause damage to the home are sometimes taken.  First, a lot of water is often used to extinguish a fire, which causes water damage to the home.  The second measure is cutting a hole in the ceiling and roof so that heat and smoke can escape,  They do this so that cool air can flow into the house, allowing for easier and safer entry to put out the flames.  This picture shows one such hole.  As part of our rebuild process, we will fix this hole that was made by the firefighters.

Mold Under The Carpet

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

When a homeowner smelled a musty odor in their bedroom, they had the room tested for mold.  There was mold found beneath the carpet and subfloor that likely occurred from moisture that was never completely dried. The customer called us to remediate the mold, so we removed the carpet to fix the issue.  Once the carpet was pulled back, we removed the visible mold.  Next, our crew applied our environmentally-safe mold protection so that the issue would not return. If you suspect or know you have mold, please do not hesitate to call us.

Flash Fire Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association a “flash fire” is defined as a type of short-duration fire that spreads rapidly through a fuel, such as dust, gas, or the vapors of an ignitible liquid, without the production of damaging pressure. This is what it looks like when a flash fire occurs as a result of improper use of propane tanks.  One unit in this multi-family building exploded due to rapid flame movement throughout.  Once the fire department had left, our crew got to work restoring the property.  Please use extreme caution when using and storing flammable substances.  If you suffer a fire or smoke damage at your home or business, please do not hesitate to call us.

Ice Storms Can Lead To Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Ice storms can cause significant damage, if not directly, then indirectly.  This pictures shows how heavy ice ice, and the effect it can have on trees that it covers.  If you have trees around your house that have branches overhead, this could be a potentially damaging situation.  If ice forms around tree limbs, they can snap off and damage your home. This could lead to secondary issues like water damage or frozen pipes. While it is warm out, trim overhanging branches that could be large enough to cause damage to your rood or siding. If you have water damage, please do not hesitate to call us.

Dirt From Water Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a water damage, sometimes it is not as easy as removing the water and drying everything out.  This low-income housing complex had a burst pipe on their second floor.  The water leaked down to the first floor, and carried with it a whole lot of dirt and debris.  The photo demonstrates just how much dirt the water stream actually brought with it. Our crew removed the water, dried everything out, and then washed the floors so that the customer was happy.  If you have water damage, please do not hesitate to call us.

Showroom Flooding

This was one of our trickiest jobs that we have taken on in recent history.  A pipe burst in a local art gallery and interior design showroom.  Due to the high value of many of the items in the business, we had to act extremely quickly to save them.  We were on scene within 30 minutes to begin extracting the water, and removing the valuable items. We set up our drying equipment to eradicate the remaining moisture and had them back in business in the shortest period of time.  If you have water in your business from a burst pipe, please call us.

Huge Water Extraction

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

This person called us with over a foot of water in their large finished basement.  We were on scene within minutes with our large water pump to extract the water.  Usually, we only need one hose to pull all the water out of any given structure.  There was so much water here that we had to use two hoses. Luis can be seen here making sure the water is flowing out properly to minimize the amount of time it took to remove all the water.  If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Ceiling Removal Due To Storm Damage

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

This picture showcases the effects of not having a leak-proof roof.  This person had postponed re-shingling their roof.  But unfortunately, they experienced the effects of that decision.  Water leaked in over the family room and started to soak the furniture.  We were called to fix the situation, which required removing a portion of the ceiling to allow for proper drying.  Make sure that your roof is up-to-date, and you address any issues as soon as they arise. If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Liquor Store Flooding

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

Recently, a local liquor store was going about their business when a piece of their ceiling tile fell onto the floor.  Over the next few hours, most of the ceiling had collapsed into the store.  Rain was causing the waterlogged material to become heavy and fall down.  This soaked a lot of the merchandise and business had to be halted for a long time.  We came in, removed the water and also carried out all the debris. If you have water in your business from a storm, please call us.

Acting Quickly May Save Your Belongings

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

When a basement floods, everything that is sitting on the floor gets wet.  Some things may be okay, but most of your belongings will become damaged, the extent of which only gets worse the longer they stay submerged.  Many times, if the water is pumped out and extracted quickly, some items can be saved, at least to some extent.  We specialize in large-scale water extraction, and can pump thousands of gallons of water in a timely manner.  This is a photo of a recent homeowner’s basement who called us.  With our equipment, we got the water out, and began the drying process.

Fire In The Garage

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

Recently, a fire broke out in a home and adjoining garage structure.  Fortunately, none of the inhabitants, one of which was a small dog, were hurt during the ordeal.  The fire consumed most of the interior, and spread rapidly into the garage, pictured here.  You can see just how hot the fire was, based on the damage to the car that was parked away from the house.  We responded quickly by boarding up the structure, and are now in the process of cleaning and deodorizing the interior. Once that step is done, the rebuild can proceed.

Mold Containment

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

Mold outbreaks are something to absolutely take seriously.  If mold spores become airborne, they can be inhaled.  This may lead to unwanted and harmful respiratory issues.  But when a mold damage occurs, it usually happens in one part of the home or business.  How do we manage this issue while safely and quickly removing mold? When dealing with mold, we build containment areas to be sure no spores are spread.  We use disposable plastic to keep the harmful particles out of unaffected areas.  This also allows for a minimal disturbance to the daily routine so that business and life can continue.

Leaky Roof No Match For Rainstorm

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

During a recent rainstorm, the roof leaked overnight at a local educational facility.  Unfortunately, the damage was not noticed until the following morning.  We were called in to fix the situation, which included extracting the water and dehumidifying the space once the bulk of the water was removed.  This photo does not show water that we pumped out.  It actually shows how much water we pulled out of the air with a dehumidifier.  All that moisture would have probably led to mold down the road if left untreated.  If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Eliminating Secondary Fire Damage

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

When a fire occurs, it is not only the building that has the fire that is affected. Often, the surrounding structures suffer secondary damage like a layer of soot and smoke odors. If not properly cleaned in a timely fashion, the issue can lead to more permanent damage that unfortunately cannot be reversed. Here we see Odir cleaning the floors of an affected apartment to remove a thin layer of soot that will also remove the resulting odors. Because we responded within hours of the fire being extinguished, this will ensure that no long-term damage will occur.

Crawl Space Cleaning

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

This customer called us with mouse droppings and other debris in the crawl space under their business. This was causing foul odors to permeate up into the actual retail area.  Because business was conducted in the space, a loss of business was at stake.  We knew that we needed to take care of the issue quickly to minimize the effects on the tenants business.  We came in and cleaned both visible and invisible contaminants, and left the space fresh. We can see Roberto here, proud of the good job he did.

Small Pipe, Big Problems

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

It is astonishing just how much damage a little water can do. Take a look at the damage in this bedroom. The entire ceiling had to be removed and some of the walls were affected as well. You can see the size of the pipe that caused the damage.  If a pipe this size can produce that much water, imagine if the pipe had been one of the larger ones in the home.

We had to remove the ceiling and portions of the wall to begin the drying process.  Once that is done, we can bring in our fans and dehumidifiers.

Mild Winters Cause Mold

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

We’ve had a pretty mild winter, which means that any water that remains from melting ice or snow will stick around. This leads to mold, which can be harmful to humans and also pets if ingested. This issue will only grow as the weather begins to warm up for the spring season.  We can safely and effectively clean mold from surfaces like the exposed wood seen here. We are spraying disinfectant to ensure that after cleaning, mold will not return.

One piece of equipment that we also use is a High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifier.  They work by filtering air through a fine mesh, removing harmful particles like mold, dust mites, and pollen that can cause adverse health affects.

One of the benefits that SERVPRO of Greenwich offers is our pack-out service. When disaster strikes your home or business, more often than not, you need to have your belongings stored while remediation is performed. Your business may smell like smoke or have a musty odor.  Items should be stored away so they do not take on any unwanted smells.  Items may also just need to be moved to make room for remediation efforts to continue.  SERVPRO will carefully wrap and store your items while we make it "Like it never even happened." Winter Cleaning Tips

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

When the temperature drops, we tend to spend more time indoors. Because this occurs, why not take the extra step to make sure you have a home you enjoy spending time in.

Here are a few small cleaning projects that you can undertake during the winter months to ensure that your home is both safe and cozy for the winter months.

Empty dryer vents - Pull the dryer out from the wall and disconnect the hose from the back of the appliance.  Use a vacuum to suck any loose lint from the exhaust hose.  Not only is this a step to take for safety measures, this will lead to a more efficient dryer performance. This can lower electricity bills a small amount.

Steam carpets and couches - Sometimes vacuuming doesn't get the whole job done. Even if your carpets look clean, carpets should be deep cleaned by a professional to eliminate any harmful and gross materials that a vacuum might miss.

One of the commercial settings that we have had success with is educational facilities. SERVPRO of Greenwich has remediated issues such as mold and water damages in many schools, ranging from elementary schools to universities, throughout Fairfield County. Attic Fire

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

This is a recent fire that started in a residential attic.  The fire started when some flammable material was left in front of a skylight, which ignited under extreme heat.  The fire started in the attic, and spread down to one side of the house.  SERVPRO of Greenwich was called in to remediate the damage.  We will be providing a few different services in this case.  First, we will be packing up contents and belongings to store while other work is being done.  We will also be cleaning the soot off the walls, as well as deodorizing the area from the smoke smell.  Then, reconstruction can begin on the actual frame of the house.

To avoid a similar disaster, remember to keep all flammable objects out of direct sunlight where they may get too hot.

Fire Education Class

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

One of the best ways to learn how to avoid a disaster occurring in your home is to be educated about the issues that can be prevented.  Getting that knowledge at an early age is even more valuable, so it becomes normal at a young age.

That is why SERVPRO of Greenwich sponsored a local class for young kids to learn about disaster prevention and management.  The children learned about fire safety in the summer class.  They learned how to make an evacuation plan for the family in the event of a fire, or any other situation where they would need to leave the house.  In the photo, the class is learning about the fire trucks and how they work to put out fires.  Each child even got to spray the hose!

Wind Damage Restoration

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricane damage sometimes includes severe wind damage. Roof damage in this situation may range from a missing roof, to harsh winds and rains shearing away asphalt tiles. Roof repair of obvious defects usually ensues in the wake of hurricane damage and storm remediation. Correcting roof damage may challenge homeowners after a disaster, since a roof leak may not appear obvious.

Wind damage may loosen shingles, which can cause another roof leak in the future. Even a subtle roof leak of this nature can produce mold inside the home. Obtaining fast roof repair may prevent long term interior damage. A wind damage home restoration expert may assist clients in receiving comprehensive roof assessments and roof repair services when hurricane damage afflicts an area. Their expertise helps property owners address storm damage and roof damage more effectively.

Storm Shutters

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Sometimes it's hard to tell what preventative measures are necessary to protect your home from a natural disaster. However, high winds and hurricane damage in the past few years have cost Americans several billions, and unprotected windows can result in expensive damages like broken windows and eventual mold.

• Accordion: Simple and straightforward to use, these manually folding shutters are available in strong materials like metal or polycarbonate.  These are the ones in the photo.

• Bahama: This stylish variety not only provides protection from heavy rain and high winds, but also from the sun.

• Colonial: Protect your dream home with traditional blinds that frame your windows and add value to your property.

• Rolling: Prepare for a storm with ease with shutters that unroll or hide away at the press of a button.

All of these different options are permanent home fixtures that come in a range of materials, colors and designs. They’ll protect your home from flying objects, heavy rains and strong winds, so you won’t have to worry about damage to your windows or your home interior.

Home Depot has some options if this is something that you would like to look into.

Water Damage Response Time

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

When a water issue strikes your home or business, response time is the most important factor when containing the damage.  SERVPRO of Greenwich is extremely fast, but steps that you can take on your own before our professionals arrive can make a huge difference.

Within Minutes:

  • Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path.
  • Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings.
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets.
  • Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp.

Hours 1 - 24:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down.
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack.
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain.
  • A musty odor appears.

Flood At A Car Dealership

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Last month, the combination of a burst pipe and excess rainwater caused a local car dealership to flood.

SERVPRO of Greenwich was called in to remediate the damage.  What was unique about this instance is that the water affected both carpeted and laminate flooring.  This presented a challenge because we needed to use multiple types of drying and dehumidifying tactics to successfully fix the issue.  We also had to do the job while not disturbing or damaging the automobile inventory.

As you can see in the photo, we were able to completely dry out the affected area.  The carpet in the office areas were left dry and odor free.

Treat Mold Quickly

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

This is a job that we recently dealt with.  The customer had a water damage that was treated by another company.  The water was not completely dried out.  This led to mold growing in the ceiling when the leftover moisture warmed and provided an ideal habitat for the mold to spread.  Unfortunately, because the issue was not properly mitigated by the initial company, SERVPRO needed to demolish part of the ceiling and walls to effectively treat the situation.  Now the mold is gone, new ceiling and drywall has been installed, and the customer is back in their home.

If you have a water damage at your home, or you suspect that you have mold growing, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Greenwich at (203) 324-1642.  Time is of the essence, and they will make it like it never even happened.

Hurricane Preparedness Week

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem. Their impacts can be felt hundreds of miles inland, and significant impacts can occur without it being a major hurricane. Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 6-12, 2018) is your time to prepare for a potential land-falling tropical storm or hurricane.

During Hurricane Preparedness Week, make sure you have a hurricane evacuation plan. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Identify someone, perhaps a friend or relative who doesn’t live in an evacuation zone or unsafe home, and coordinate with them to use their home as your evacuation destination. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. Put the plan in writing for you and those you care about.

If a hurricane strikes, you’re going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy recovery period that could follow. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family a minimum of one week. Electricity and water could be out for at least that long. You’ll need extra cash, a battery-powered radio and flashlights.

This Hurricane Preparedness Week, call your insurance company or agent and ask for an insurance checkup to make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home. Don’t forget coverage for your car or boat. Remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for flooding. Act now as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.

The time to prepare for a hurricane is before the season begins, when you have the time and are not under pressure. Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan. Know where you will ride out the storm and get your supplies now. You don’t want to be standing in long lines when a Hurricane Watch is issued. Those supplies that you need will probably be sold out by the time you reach the front of the line. Being prepared, before a hurricane threatens, makes you resilient to the hurricane impacts of wind and water. It will mean the difference between your being a hurricane victim and a hurricane survivor.

Document Recovery with SERVPRO of Greenwich

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Greenwich, we have the ability to save or recover your most important documents after a loss.  Whether it be a fire loss, water loss or flooding, or smoke damage, we have the capabilities to clean and dry those documents to have your commercial or residential property back to its original state as soon as possible.

We will begin by taking inventory of your documents at your home or office before we package them to transport for drying.

Once the documents arrive at our facility, they will go through a decontamination process to remove any bacteria left behind, depending on what type of loss has occurred.

We will then go through each box, page by page, to wipe down and remove dirt, soot, or other contaminants.  We have 3 levels of cleaning based on the type of soiling, and how heavy it is.

Many times documents that have been affected will hold residual smells of contaminants, or mildew, and should be deodorized before being returned to your client.

With the new age of technology, digitizing records and documents has become a standard practice in most industries. This eliminates the need to have massive file storage rooms and allows us to access records at the click of a button. If your file room was damaged by water, or smoke, and needed to be cleaned, dried, or decontaminated, digitizing might be a good choice to eliminate the need to have 100’s or even 1000’s of documents and records in storage.

During the aftermath of your loss,  often times facilities will find that they have documents they no longer need and would simply like to have them disposed of properly.  SERVPRO of Greenwich is able to help with this process as well.

Water Leak in a Commercial Building

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Recently, we were called to remediate a large-scale water damage in a multi-use commercial building.  Multiple businesses were affected when a sink malfunctioned, and water pooled on the second floor, seeped into the drywall, and flowed down to the first floor.

Our crew responded quickly, using cutting-edge equipment to extract thousands of gallons of water.  Once the excess water was removed, we observed that the carpets and the lower drywall was the most in need of drying.  Our skilled crew set fans to dry the affected area in a timely and efficient manner.  The photo shows our fans in action as they evaporate the moisture in one of the affected carpeted areas.

The customers involved were taken care of, and were all happy with the outcome after our crews finished the job.

SERVPRO of Greenwich is always ready to help those in need, so if you suffer a damage like this, please do not hesitate to call.

Mold In Your Washing Machine

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

We are soon entering warmer weather, which puts us at higher risk for mold and mold-related issues.  One place that we often overlook for mold is in our washing machine.  Whether top-load or front-load, new or used, every washing machine provides an ideal habitat for mold. The high moisture content in both the machine and the resulting atmosphere, the typical poorly-ventilated laundry room with its stale warm air, and the continual supply of decomposing organic material provided by soiled laundry all contribute to an environment conducive to mold growth and its accompanying mildew smell.

Here is how to ensure your washer and the surrounding area stays free of harmful mold:

You will need the following materials:

• White vinegar

• A natural all-purpose mold killing solution

• A cleaning rag (or sponge)

Begin with the exterior of the machine.  Use vinegar or the all-purpose mold killing solution to wipe down the exterior of the machine. This will remove the more visible grime, such as dust and oily fingerprints. (Both organic sources provide floating mold spores with a tantalizing invitation to congregate and colonize.)

Next, clean around the lid and seal. For front-load washers, the rubber door seal will need extra care in order to ensure the removal of mold and mildew. Gently pull back on the rubber stripping and use vinegar or the all-purpose mold killing solution. Even if no mildew or scum is visible, Step 2 is necessary in the prevention of mold growth.

——

Pour two cups of vinegar or lemon juice into the washer. Run the machine for a complete cycle on the longest, hottest setting. This will remove the mold odor and mildew smell, as well as stains and the build-up of detergents.

Once you have completed your cleaning process, discard the rags or sponges that you used, as they may contain harmful mold particles.

The majority of owners neglect to do regular maintenance on their washing machines. In addition, some owners only compound matters by leaving laundry in the machine hours, sometimes even a day or more, after a wash has completed.  What is often overlooked is the fact that mold grows quickly and can thrive off of laundry detergent due to its plant-based (and even animal fat or synthetic) components.  So use good timing when doing your laundry, and move your clothes to the dryer promptly.

What is Ice Damming?

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

An ice dam is an ice build-up on the eaves of sloped roofs of heated buildings that results from melting snow under a snow pack reaching the eave and freezing there. Freezing at the eave impedes the drainage of meltwater, which adds to the ice dam and causes backup of the meltwater in a manner, which may cause water leakage into the roof and consequent damage to the building and its contents if the water leaks through the roof.

Ice dams are a common sight in the Northeast. We've handled several claims this past month stemming from ice damming. What we've found is the flatter the pitch of the roof, the easier it is for an ice dam to get a grip. Gutters at the eaves can also trap snow and ice. If snow and ice build up high enough in the gutter, it can provide a foundation for an ice dam.

Stay tuned for our next blog, where we’ll tell you how to prevent these dangerous ice dams.

Ice Dam Prevention

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

PREVENTING ICE DAMS

You can scrape snow from the roof whenever it falls, using a snow rake from below or a broom or plastic shovel from above. BE CAREFUL: The first method can bury you in snow, while the second can send you slipping off the roof. Hire someone who knows how to use a safety line.

You can replace your shingle roof with standing seam or other metal roof. Or you can replace the bottom three feet or so of your shingle roof with a wide metal drip edge. Whatever you do, install a water-repellent membrane under any new roofing.

NOTE: If your roof is not very steep, an ice dam can still form on metal roofing and drip edges.

DEALING WITH EXISTING ICE DAMS

1. Remove the ice dam by breaking it free in small chucks. Do NOT use an ax or other sharp tool! You’ll cut through the shingles. Instead, tap lightly with a blunt mallet. This is slow, dangerous work, so hire someone experienced at roofing. Even if you do it safely, the chunks of ice can take pieces of shingle with them.

2. Clear out gutters and downspouts. Again, this is ladder work and an easy way to damage either plastic or metal gutters and spouts.

3. Melt troughs through the ice dam with calcium chloride ice melter. Do NOT use rock salt! It will damage paint, metals, and plants beneath the eave and wherever the salty water drains.

A good trough-maker is a tube of cloth (a leg from an old pair of panty hose works well). Fill it with calcium chloride, tie off the top, and lay it vertically across the ice dam. It will slowly melt its way down through the dam, clearing a path for the underlying water to flow free.

WHAT DAMAGE DO ICE DAMS CAUSE?

When an ice dam gets big enough, melted water backs up behind it and seeps underneath the shingles. Eventually, it will drip into the insulation and down into the ceilings and exterior walls beneath the eave, ruining sheetrock and paint. If the ice dam breaks free, it can pull shingles and gutters off with it, and it will damage anything it falls on: shrubs, windowsills, cars, pets, and people. If the roof sheathing stays wet, it can form mildew and start to rot.

That's where we come into play. We can't prevent the ice damming from happening, but we can help you take care of the damages that it can cause.

Frozen Pipe Water Damage In Stamford

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Temperatures have fluctuated between cold and bone-chillingly cold.  When it gets very cold, homes and businesses are at higher risk of pipes freezing and ultimately bursting.

Here are a few tips to remember:

• Check around your home or business for areas where water supply lines are in unheated areas. Wrap exposed pipes with foam, insulated materials or pipe heating cables. Watch these locations on a daily basis when temperatures is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

• If you are going out of town, and you suspect that temperatures will drop, turn off the water to your home and open all the taps to drain the water system. Set your temperature no lower than 55° F.

• Unhook the water hoses from the exterior of the home and bring them inside, to maintain their life.

• Drip your faucets, to reduce the build-up of pressure in the pipes during an arctic blast weather advisory.

• Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much costlier repair job if pipes freeze and burst

• Open cabinet doors when temperatures are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The warm air can circulate around the pipes and prevent the water from freezing.

Popular Locations of Frozen Pipes:

• Outside wall

• Under a sink

• Unheated crawlspace or basement

• Outside water spigot

• Swimming pool supply lines

• Water sprinkler lines

• Attics

• Garages

Tips on Thawing Frozen Pipes:

• If a pipe bursts before it is thawed, immediately shut off the water at the water main to prevent further damage!

• Frozen but not ruptured? If you turn on the faucet and the water doesn’t come out or comes out in a trickle, your pipes are probably frozen. You need to act quickly to thaw the frozen pipe before it bursts.

• Identify the frozen water supply pipe.

• Open a faucet supplied by the frozen line, even if you have not found the frozen spot.

• To find the blockage, follow the pipe back from the faucet to where it runs through cold areas such as an exterior wall, unheated crawl space or in some cases an unheated basement if the pipe is near an outside wall.

• Often the frozen area of the pipe will be frosted or have ice on it. If the situation is getting critical the pipe may be slightly bulged or look slightly fissured.

Frozen Pipe Behind a Wall:

• Leave the main water valve near your water meter open when thawing the pipe.

• If the frozen pipe is behind a wall or ceiling, you’ve got a challenge on your hands. You have three choices:

• Turn up the heat in the house and wait.

• Use an infrared lamp or lamps to heat the wall where you think the frozen area is located. Infrared lamps are better than regular heat lamps because the heat passes through the air without heating it, directing more energy to warming the wall and frozen pipe.

• Tear out part of the wall or ceiling to get at the frozen section of pipe. Then thaw the pipe as an exposed pipe.

If Your Pipes Burst…

• Turn off the water supply. Locate your water shut off valve and turn off the main water shut-off valve. You should find this in the basement or where the service pipe enters your home. Drain the system by turning on all your cold-water valves.

What You Can Do to Manage the Damage (until we get there):

• Water Buckets. If you notice the leak quickly you can catch dripping water in buckets.

• Make a hole in the ceiling to let water out.

• Turn off electronics/appliances

• Open Drawers, closets and cabinet doors to in enhance drying.

Fire Extinguisher Importance For Your Home or Business

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Office buildings need specific fire safety equipment to keep both employees and clients safe. This includes smoke detectors, sprinklers, fire alarms, and extinguishers.

The first step in fire damage restoration is to put out the fire using the proper tools.  A first responder may use an approved portable fire extinguisher to prevent a small fire from growing and causing further damage.

The National Fire Protection Agency publishes a series of standards and requirements for portable fire extinguishers called NFPA 10, available here.

No matter what the size of the fire, your first priority should be to get everyone out safely and call 911.  Once the fire has been put out, you can call SERVPRO of Greenwich at (203) 324-1642 to assist.

Whether your Fairfield County home has emergency flood damage or you need your upholstery cleaned, you can depend on us.  Our technicians have extensive cleaning and restoration training and can make your property look its best.  Learn more about our residential services:

Fire Investigation Assistance

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

After a large fire loss many questions need to be answered such as:

• What was the source of the fire?

• Were there any fire accelerants present?

• Was there negligence or arson activity?

• Was it a mechanical/structural issue or human error?

Local fire departments, private insurance companies, gas and power company representatives and many others are called upon to investigate the scene of the fire and do their best to answer these and many other questions. This process can take from a few days to several weeks.

SERVPRO will set up a containment fence around the perimeter of the property and install any needed wind and/or erosion control barriers. We will bring on site portable restrooms and any heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes and skid steers that are requested by the investigation team.  We provide the investigators with a mobile office, generators for power, lights and computers, hard hats, gloves, respirators, eye protection, water, coffee and miscellaneous office supplies.

Providing the fire investigation team with all the resources necessary to accurately and quickly determine the cause of the fire, helps streamline the entire insurance claims process, ensuring the reconstruction is started sooner for the property owners, so they can get back to living Like It Never Even Happened.

SERVPRO of Greenwich is here to help with all fire damage and remediation issues.

Avoiding a Dryer Fire

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

The fear of a dryer fire is one that is not commonly heard of, however, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an estimated annual 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and 10 injuries due to clothes dryer fires. Several hundred people a year are also subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning from improper dryer vent setups. The financial costs come to nearly $100,000,000 per year. In some cases faulty appliances are to blame, but many fires can be prevented with proper dryer venting.

Here are some small steps to take to Avoid a Dryer Fire:

1. Dryer's produce large amounts of lint. Be sure to clean the lint trap after EVERY use of the dryer.

2. Dryer Vents should ONLY be made of metal and be short and straight. Bends and curves result in lint buildup increasing the risk of a fire.

3. Do not run the dryer when you are away from home or sleeping.

Be Smart About Garage Storage

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

With spring coming in the coming months, most of us try to accomplish new goals, get a new fresh start. Getting healthy, organizing our homes, bettering our lives' always seem to be at the top of the list. One space to start cleaning and organizing is the garage! That extra storage area that easily becomes a catchall for excess items.  We have compiled a list of items that should not be stored in your garage. Get them out and reclaim your space.

Paint - Because the garage is prone to extreme temperature changes, paint should not be stored in the garage.  Recycle paint or donate it.

Electronics- If you are putting electronics out in the garage, you must not be using them.  Donate these items because they can’t withstand the temperature fluctuations and will easily break.

Propane and Hazardous Chemicals- Proper ventilation is key for storage of propane and hazardous chemicals.  For safety reasons, these items need to be stored outside.

Food- Keeping food in the garage is an open invitation to rodents and insects.  Although shopping in bulk can save money, storing extra food in the garage will cause problems. The moisture and humidity will spoil the food. Find room in the house for food storage.

Cardboard boxes- Insects, mice and other rodents love cardboard.  Invest in waterproof plastic bins to store your items.

Mold After A Disaster

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Picture this: Your home or business is affected by a storm, whether the roof suffered a structural issue, or you had flooding from excess water coming in.  You fix the hole in the roof and dry the water yourself, and life continues as normal.  A couple months down the road, you find mold where the storm had previously had damaged your building.

Make sure this doesn’t happen.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has some great info about how to prevent mold after a storm hits your home or business.

After natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, excess moisture and standing water contribute to the growth of mold in homes and other buildings. When returning to a home that has been flooded, be aware that mold may be present and may be a health risk for your family.

Clean up and dry out the building quickly (within 24 to 48 hours - SERVPRO of Greenwich can help with this). Open doors and windows. Use fans to dry out the building. Position fans to blow air out doors or windows.

Remove all porous items that have been wet for more than 48 hours and that cannot be thoroughly cleaned and dried. These items can remain a source of mold growth and should be removed from the home. Porous, noncleanable items include carpeting and carpet padding, upholstery, wallpaper, drywall, floor and ceiling tiles, insulation material, some clothing, leather, paper, wood, and food. Removal and cleaning are important because even dead mold may cause allergic reactions in some people.

To prevent mold growth, clean wet items and surfaces with detergent and water.

Protect Your Investment by Inspecting Your Crawlspace

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Over time crawlspaces need maintenance.

Crawl Spaces in Fairfield County

Many homes in southwest Connecticut are built on crawlspaces.  Snow load, water runoff, and rising water tables need to be dealt with to maintain your property.

If maintained properly, crawlspaces have advantages over other types of construction.

• It gets the house above the ground, an important point in damp areas.

• It is less expensive than a basement, and comparable to the price of a slab foundation.

• Duct work, plumbing, and electrical can run in the crawl space, which makes them easier to service, and move if necessary.

Items to inspect for are:

• Standing water on top of vapor barrier.

• Condensation or leaks on water pipes or ductwork.

• Muddy soil.

• Staining on walls from water or efflorescence.

• Sagging or missing insulation.

• Plumbing leaks.

• Musty/moldy or foul odors.

• Deteriorated vapor barrier.

If mold is found anywhere in your crawlspace, call SERVPRO of Greenwich to make it "Like it never even happened."

Storm Safety Tips

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Lightning from thunderstorms injures hundreds of people in the U.S. every year and kills dozens. These causalities are easily preventable if you follow these simple safety tips.

1) Listen to the radio and television for severe thunderstorm warnings. The National Weather Service issues warnings for counties and even sends out text messages now to our mobile phones when storms are on their way. Pay attention and heed their warnings for safety.

2) Remember the 30 second rule. If there is not 30 seconds in between the time you see lightning and hear thunder, it’s time to go indoors.

3) Lightning typically strikes the tallest object around so if there is a storm, move indoors if at all possible or into a hard top car if there are no buildings around.

4) Once inside, stay away from windows, plumbing and electrical. If lightning strikes outside, it can carry inside via land lines.

5) Get out of boats and away from bodies of water. If you can hear thunder than you are close enough to get struck by lightning.

6) If you are caught outside, avoid standing by tall isolated objects such as trees. Find a grouping of small trees surrounded by taller ones, avoid bodies of water, and if there is only open spaces, look for a dry low-lying area and try to make yourself the smallest target possible. Do not lay flat on the ground, rather crouch with your head between your knees. Sheds, outhouses and tents provide no safety so keep this in mind when you are hiking or camping. Always think ahead and be prepared in the event that you are caught in a thunderstorm and if possible, turn around on your trip and head home.

Power Outage Tips

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

When a heavy storm hits your area, your power may go out.  Most of us have experienced it before.  It can range from a minor inconvenience that lasts less than an hour, to a multi-day event that requires safety precautions be taken.

If your refrigerator loses power, food and other perishables are safe to consume if the outage lasts 4 hours or less.  After this period, bacteria can grow and cause food to be unsafe to eat. Medications that need to be refrigerated can lose their potency if warmed too much.  Most medications are still effective up to 24 hours after a power loss.  Still check each label to verify. After that period, discard all medications unless otherwise noted.

If an outage occurs in either the winter or summer, extreme temperatures can come into play.  Both heat stroke and hypothermia can affect people if the building without power has no means of temperature regulation.  If too hot, seek out a commercial space that has a generator powering an air conditioning system.

We are an IICRC Certified Firm

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies.

IICRC Certified Firms must

• Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.

• Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.

• Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.

• Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.

• Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops the Standards for The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Prevent Legionnaire’s Disease in Commercial Settings

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

From the CDC:

Water System Maintenance

The key to preventing Legionnaires’ disease is to   prevent Legionella colonization (growth) in water systems.  Guidelines for reducing the risk of Legionella growth and spread are available for those who maintain and manage building water systems, including systems for potable (water for drinking and showering), non-potable, and recreational water from ASHRAE®. ASHRAE is a not-for-profit organization that develops standards and guidelines for industries that design, manufacture, and maintain building systems.

Dangers of Asbestos in a Business

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Although asbestos is for the most part no longer used in construction and manufacturing, many buildings today still retain traces or even large quantities of asbestos. Particularly in older buildings, testing for and identifying this asbestos is an important job, but one that is unfortunately neglected by many business owners. Failing to test for asbestos when making renovations or restorations to a building can cause long-term negative health effects for restoration professionals, customers, and even yourself, creating a legal and financial disaster large enough to ruin most businesses. There are specific Federal regulations mandated by the EPA regarding renovating buildings, and asbestos abatement. SERVPRO provides certified asbestos testing to ensure the safety of our technicians and your customers alike.

Asbestos testing for a business is not only advisable for practical reasons, but also for legal ones. Failing to test for asbestos can lead to steep fines and regulatory penalties, regardless of whether or not the substance is present. OSHA has explicit guidelines in place regarding demolition or renovations of commercial structures, especially schools, and other municipal buildings. Furthermore, if a customer or employee gets sick as a result of untested asbestos, you may be at risk of a costly and difficult lawsuit. Federal and state authorities alike take this process seriously, which is why it is always recommended to hire a certified company like SERVPRO to complete the task.

Health Reasons
In addition to laws on the subject, testing for asbestos should be a major consideration for your health. Asbestos can cause many negative health effects, some of which can shorten your lifespan or lead to long-term illness. Asbestos is a known carcinogen. The longer you are exposed to it, the more likely many of these side effects are to manifest, meaning that valued employees and regular customers may also be at risk. Just as the removal of mold growth can help to avoid a medical emergency in your business, so too can asbestos testing prevent a host of serious medical issues.

Your local SERVPRO is certified in asbestos testing and guarantees a fast and efficient process for your business. Call us today for our services or a quote.

Strange (but common) Places to Find Mold

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can grow in many places.

When we think of mold problems we equate it to damp basements and black gross mold growing on drywall; but mold is insidious and can grow in places where you least expect it. Mold is fast growing, can pop up within 24 hours of being exposed to moisture, and spreads quickly.

Here are some common places where mold forms that you might not be aware of:

• Under Your Refrigerator

The spaces behind and under your fridge rarely see the light of day, which make them a perfect breeding ground for mold. Clean all water lines and drip pans and ensure they are not leaking; even a small leak can lead to a huge mold problem. Take the extra time to check and clean behind and underneath your refrigerator.

• Chimneys

Your chimney can easily become a breeding ground for mold. Brick crevices collect water, dirt, and other organic debris. Rusted chimney caps and faulty flashing let in rain and snow, encouraging mold to grow. Replace rusted caps and fix flashing. Call a licensed mold removal specialist to remove the mold in your chimneys. To prevent mold, get your chimney cleaned by a professional chimney sweep at least once a year.

• Front-Loading Washing Machines

Front-loading washing machines are great, but can be a hotspot for mold growth. The gasket around the door on front-loading washing machines often stays wet because the door is usually closed when not in use. Add some lint to the moisture and mold happily munches and multiplies. Wipe the gasket and glass dry before you shut the door. If you spot mold, run a hot water wash with some chlorine bleach (no clothes), which will kill the fungi. Even if you have a top-load washer make sure to regularly check behind and underneath your washer and dryer to make sure there are no leaks or source of moisture. Clean out vents and lint traps to prevent mold havens, as well as fire hazards.

• Window Sashes and Seals

Condensation from windows provides the moisture mold loves, and the dirt and dust that collect provide the perfect place for the mold to settle. After heavy rains open windows and wipe moisture from the bottoms of sashes and windowsills. Replace any broken seals and if you notice any water has leaked into the wood and walls call a professional to see if the problem has caused mold.

• Air Conditioners

Air conditioning units trap dust and pollen (a good meal for mold) and grab moisture from the air. If you don’t run your AC unit at least every 24 hours in warm weather humidity in your house climbs, giving mold the opportunity to grow in AC ducts, drain pans, and on coils. Drip pans and drainage hoses on window units can leak causing mold to grow into the windowsill and dry wall. If mold grows in your central air conditioning unit you’ll have to hire a mold remediation pro to clean out the system.

If you suspect you may have mold contact the experts at SERVPRO of Greenwich.

Cleaning Mold from Tiles & Grout

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

Removing mold from tiles and grout can be a lengthy process, but SERVPRO of Greenwich does our best to get it taken care of in the proper steps.

First, begin by scrubbing the mold off the tiles and grout. You should use a scrubbing brush along with a household cleaning product or mold killing product. There are also commercial tile or grout cleaners you can buy.

After this you'll probably find there is still mold stains left on the grout. You can use bleach to fade these stains away. Before you use the bleach you should spot test it to make sure that it won't discolor your tiles. You should also wear gloves to protect your hands from the bleach.

Apply the bleach to the grout and leave it sit for about 10 minutes. Instead of chlorine bleach you can use hydrogen peroxide if you like. Another alternative is to use baking soda. Mix it with water to create a paste and then use a toothbrush to scrub it onto the grout.

If you find the stain remains on the grout after bleaching then repeat the process. Give it some time and this should fade away the mold stains on the grout.

Fresh Year, Fresh Look with Dry Ice Blasting

11/29/2017 (Permalink)

Dry ice blasting is a relatively new cleaning process using solid CO2 pellets (known as dry ice). It is
primarily used for industrial use in a variety of applications. The pellets sublimate (convert directly from a solid blast pellet to a vapor (CO2) leaving no residue. The process is superior to sand blasting, glass bead blasting and other types of cleaning methods for numerous reasons.

SERVPRO of Greenwich demonstrates the effectiveness of dry ice blasting on a heavily traveled sidewalk in downtown Stamford, CT.  This is a great service that SERVPRO of Stamford provides to many of our commercial clients.

There's never a convenient time for fire, water, or any other damage to strike your Stamford commercial property. Every hour spent cleaning up is an hour of lost revenue and productivity. So when the need arises for professional cleaning or emergency restoration services we have the training and expertise to respond promptly with highly trained technicians to get your property back to business.

Be Prepared For A Hurricane

5/12/2017 (Permalink)

The threat of a potential hurricane is always nerve wracking to all in the affected area. However, being prepared and knowledgeable of precautionary measures to take in the event of a hurricane can ease some the stress and panic you may be experiencing.

Having a ready to go emergency kit is key in any disaster situation. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the contents of this kit should include:

  • Map(s) of your local area

  • Tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers or pliers to maneuver utilities

  • Matches

  • Sanitation products such as baby wipes, trash bags and disinfectant

  • Dust masks in the case of air contamination

  • Plastic sheeting and Duct Tape for creating shelter-in-place.

  • A battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA weather radio

  • Multiple flash lights

  • Surplus of batteries (for radio/flashlight)

  • A First aid kit

  • At least 3 days worth of non perishable food (per person) and can opener if needed

  • At least 3 days worth of water (1 gallon per person, per day)

This basic list is, of course, to be adjusted and will differ person to person depending on specific needs such as any medications, pet needs, money, gasoline etc. But this list provided is a staple for a basic emergency kit.

To be aware of what is happening around you before the storm hits, be sure to frequently check the news to gather updated information on the storm. Familiarize yourself with which is the safest room in your home, evacuation routes, and locations of shelters.

During the storm the measures to take are quite simple. If no emergency evacuation is issued, stay in the safest room of your home, away from all windows and have all necessary emergency supplies on hand. Listen to a battery powered radio for updates and be sure the storm is officially over before leaving shelter. Hurricanes are known to subside for a brief amount of time if the eye of the storm passes over you, but then resumes again in full force.

After you are sure the storm is over you may go outside and observe any serious damage. If there are any signs of danger such as downed power lines and fallen trees, report them immediately and steer clear of any threat.

If at any point during the storm your home experienced extreme damages (water, structural) SERVPRO of Greenwich is a 24/7 emergency cleanup and restoration company that can service all of your needs. With quick responses we will have someone on their way to meet you in no time and offer our help to the best of our ability. SERVPRO Expands PGA Sponsorship with PGA Fantasy Golf

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

There is an old adage: “It never rains on a golf course.” As the official cleanup and restoration company of the PGA TOUR, SERVPRO® knows this isn’t true, but rain or shine, fans follow their favorite players’ performance at PGA golf tournaments throughout the season. Recognizing the ever-growing popularity of the game, SERVPRO has expanded its relationship with the PGA TOUR by becoming the presenting sponsor of the PGA Fantasy Golf games, available at pgatour.com/fantasy.

“We know people don’t associate SERVPRO with the wide-open spaces and fair weather feeling of a golf course. After all, SERVPRO is the company you turn to when the unexpected, even the unthinkable, happens to your home or business,” says Michael Keating, owner of SERVPRO® of Stamford. “But each SERVPRO business is also a local business, there to support the community in good times and bad. Teaming up with the PGA TOUR as the sponsor of their Fantasy Golf Suite helps us build connections within our local community. We want local home and business owners to know that we are there for them ready to respond at a moment’s notice if things go wrong.”

The new “One & Done” games were launched on January 3, 2017*, but the game structure allows players to join in on the fun at any point during the current season. Each week, game players select one player to earn points for them in that week’s tournament. The PGA Tour Fantasy game is based on accumulated FedEx Cup points and the PGA Tour Champions game is based on accumulated Charles Schwab Cup points. A player may select a given golfer for a tournament in each of the One & Done games only once in each season. Since some tournaments earn a pro golfer more points than others, game strategy is based on selecting the right golfers for the right tournaments.

“With the first major tournament of the season—The Masters—just around the corner, now is a great time to start your One & Done game for this year’s tour,” says Keating. “If you ‘master’ the trick of choosing the right golfers in the right tournaments, you could jump to the top of your Fantasy league.” The top finisher in the PGA TOUR game will win a new set of golf clubs, while the top prize for the PGA TOUR Champions game is a trip for two to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, November 6-12.

SERVPRO of Stamford specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. Causes of Mold in Homes

3/9/2017 (Permalink)

Mold is a vital piece of nature, assisting with the disintegration of natural matter and the recycling of supplements in biological systems. While outdoor mold is fundamental, mold developing inside present’s health risks and can bring about property damage. Molds recreate by method of minor airborne spores that travel essentially anyplace, even in our homes.

Despite the fact that there are hints of mold spores indoors, they require the right "ingredients" to produce mold. Unfortunately, the conditions for mold development are found in many homes: a nourishment source, (for example, drywall, rugs, and wood), warmth, lack of light, enough time to develop, and above all, dampness. Since dampness is a fundamental factor in mold development, here are the most common culprits that cause heightened dampness in homes:

  • Flooding can cause a measurable amount of water into your home, bringing on serious water damage and conceivably cause mold development inside 24-48 hours. Calling an expert restoration professional such as SERVPRO promptly is your best defense with regards to mitigating water damage and preventing mold development.
  • Increased humidity can happen in homes from multiple sources — muggy climate, persistent rain, cooking, showering, and so on. To help prevent development of mold growth in your home, ensure your home is all around ventilated and keep the humidity below 55 percent.
  • Deficient ventilation leads to increased humidity, and due to this, mold development and different issues like indoor contamination. Try to open entryways as well as windows when viable and to utilize fans as needed.
  • Leaking pipes are a typical issue in homes and should be settled promptly. In many cases, leaks are hidden from view, such as inside walls or above the ceiling, so make a point to investigate wall and ceiling stains routinely.
  • Roof leaks are additionally a way for water to saturate your home and cause mold. In the event that you see water stains on the ceiling, check for water damage in the attic and have your roof assessed and repaired at the earliest opportunity.
  • Condensation happens when warm dampness loaded air interacts with chilly surfaces. Condensation can be seen on walls, windows, solid floors or metal pipes. Reduce condensation by adjusting the humidity in your home.
  • Basements give astounding conditions for mold development because of poor ventilation, cooler temperatures (that advance condensation), and incessant water leaks and flooding.

Mold can also grow in various unexpected areas in the home, which can make mold remediation more difficult. For professional mold removal, as well as fire and water restoration services, contact the professional experts at SERVPRO today.

Aftermath of a Home Fire

3/9/2017 (Permalink)

Recovering from a fire is not easy by any means. It is an emotionally draining process that turns your life upset down. The hardest part comes at the beginning, when you feel helpless and are completely unsure as to how to proceed. With that in mind, our goal is to present to you the fundamental steps you need to take immediately after the fire is extinguished.

Deal With Insurance

You should already be on the phone with your insurance agent before the firefighters even get done putting out the fire. Mind you, this is just the beginning. After a few days, you’ll need to get a copy of the official “fire report” from your local fire department. The insurance agency will likely send an adjustor out to survey the damage and help you get in touch with a restoration agency, such as the professionals at SERVPRO.

If you are renting, then you’ll obviously need to contact the owner of the home. If you own home but don’t have insurance, on the other hand, then you’ll want to speak with the Internal Revenue Service. You might be eligible for something known as casualty loss.

Settle in Somewhere

Most likely, your home is currently in an unlivable state, meaning you’re going to have to find somewhere else to stay. Your best bet is to stay with friends or family. However, if that’s not an option, check with your insurance company to see if your policy covers temporary living expenses. Otherwise, contact the American Red Cross.

Before you leave, try to rummage through your home for some essential items like the following: Identification Cards, Medications, Eye Glasses / Hearing Aids, Wallets, Credit Cards / Checkbooks, Money. **Only do this AFTERyou get permission from the firefighters to reenter your home.**

Turn Off Utilities

Make certain you get all of your primary utilities turned off.  Why waste money for services when you are not even living in your home? Plus, restoration cannot be performed on your home if there’s still electricity and such running through it. The risks of electrocution would be far too high.

Contact a Restoration Company

This is perhaps the most important step. You’ll need to contact a professional, full-service restoration company, such as SERVPRO. Our company is trained specifically to deal with post-tragedy damage. Below is a list of some of the things you can expect us to do:

  • The company will start by removing all the water from your home. During a fire, a lot of water from the firefighters hoses usually collects all over the place. Plus, fires sometimes cause pipes to burst, thus leading to even more severe flooding. The point is that restoration cannot begin until the water is first removed.

  • The company will then start with water restoration. Carpets, walls, ducts must be dried. Mold must be removed. Just this step itself can take a few days.

  • Next is the actual fire restoration. First and foremost, the company will inspect the structural foundation of your home and fix any major problems. Obviously, if a ceiling is about to crash, then it must be attended to before any other restoration efforts can be completed.

  • Once the structural foundation is secure, the specialists will start cleaning up soot/smoke damage, deodorizing everything (carpets, walls, furniture, etc.) and basically returning the home back to normal. If anything is so damaged that it cannot be repaired, it’ll be removed and thrown away. It’s your responsibility to let your insurance company know what items you lost.

  • Last, but not least, the company will clean up the remaining mess (dust, debris, etc.) and rearrange everything back into place.

Move Back In

Finally, you get to move back into your home and resume life. Unfortunately, it can take quite a bit of time before you even get to this final step. We’re talking about several weeks. The truth is that restoring a home from a fire takes a lot of time, a lot of resources and a lot of money.

Just remember to keep in close contact with your insurance company through the whole process. If all goes well, you’ll get your home back in one piece, and you’ll get your lost possessions replaced.

When you have fire, water and mold restoration service needs, give the experienced professionals at SERVPRO a call.

Saving Personal Items from Water Damage

3/9/2017 (Permalink)

One of the most common topics after a client suffers water damage, is how and what they can save from water damage.  Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer to this question. Every water damage is unique in some sense, so what can be saved is really on a case by case basis. However, here are some guidelines that you can use to make the best decision possible.

What Type of Water Damage

Determining whether the water that damaged your personal belongings is clean or contaminated will be a big factor in whether or not it can be salvaged. Obviously, if you are dealing with clean water, the chances of you being able to save some of your belongings is higher.  Even though it may be possible to restore something that is damaged by contaminated water, it is more than likely not worth the health risk that it may bring.

Porous vs Non Porous Materials

Porous materials such as fabrics, wood, and paper are very good at retaining water. This also means it increases the chance of other dangers like mold growth, and damage beyond repair. This is not always the case and if handled quickly and properly, many times these items can be saved as well. On the other hand, porous materials like marble, metal, and porcelain - among others - usually have no problem being restored. Since there is really nothing for bacteria and mold to root itself in, a simple cleaning is usually no problem.

The Amount of Time the Water Saturated

Another factor that will come into the equation of determining what can and cannot be saved is how long the materials have been wet for. The longer an item sits in water, the deeper it can penetrate. As you can imagine, this makes it increasingly more difficult to bring it back to its normal state. The perfect example of this is wooden furniture. It takes quite a bit of time for it to really absorb and become completely water logged. If you get personal belongings out of the standing water and begin the drying process right away, you have a good chance of being able to save them.

Factor in the Replacement Cost

Water damage restoration of personal belongings is no different than any other type of repair. You will always want to evaluate how much it is going to cost to repair something versus simply replacing it. Is the item you want to save really worth paying a professional to do work on it? Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not.

You should also take into account that paying for restoration does not guarantee your item will be returned to its original state. If that’s the case, you’ll have to replace the item anyways.

If you are unsure about whether or not one of your items could be salvaged, it is best that you get it analyzed by a professional. If you hire a water damage restoration company to handle a dry out of your property, they will be able to assist you in assessing damage to your personal belongings as well. To speak to a professional water restoration representative at SERVPRO, contact them today.  They are always there to help.

Simple Water Cleanup Tricks

3/9/2017 (Permalink)

Dealing with water damage requires seeking the help of a trained professional water restoration expert, such as the experts from SERVPRO of Greenwich. Before they get there, there are a few things you can do to assist in keeping the damages to a minimum. Here are a few tips:

Turn Off the Water

You might be tempted to seek out the source of the leak as your first step. This can be problematic, however, depending on the type of leak or damage. If, for instance is simply an overflowed sink, then you would just turn off the sink. However, what if a pipe that you can’t see has burst?

It’s because of reasons like these that you need to turn off the water supply as soon as possible. It is also recommended that you temporarily turn off electrical power as well. The last thing you want is for the water to mix with electrical wires!

Accelerate the Drying Process

The next step entails doing everything in your power to get your home to dry. Start by opening windows and turning on fans. This will get air flowing through your home, which will help to start drying it and also reduce the buildup of disgusting odors.

If you have a dehumidifier, turn it on immediately. It will extract moisture from the air, thus helping accelerate the drying process. Run it for as long as possible. If you stop early, it could lead to the growing of mold and mildew.

If you don’t have a dehumidifier, then don’t worry, because the water restoration experts will bring one with them. As we said earlier, however, just make sure you contact them right away. They need to get to your home as soon as possible!

Make sure you also remove rugs and other portable carpeting and place them outside to dry. Try to wipe down furniture and personal items (books, chairs, toys) as much as possible.

Pull Out a Wet/Dry Vacuum

Another step that we recommend taking is pulling out a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. We understand that you might not have one. If you do, use it to remove as much water as possible from carpets, upholstered furniture and/or tile and wood floors.

This process can take quite a while, but it’s important to remove as much water as possible. Also, make sure you focus more on wood surfaces than carpeted areas. Due to wood’s porous nature, it’s apt to soak up all the water, which in turn will cause it to become warped and delaminated.

Again, if you don’t have a wet/dry vacuum, don’t worry. The restoration professionals will take care of this for you. Just make sure you contact them immediately!

THINGS NOT TO DO:

Never leave web fabrics and clothing items in place. Try to hang them.

Also avoid leaving books, magazines and other such items on wet floors.

Please refrain from trying to use a regular vacuum cleaner to clean up water.

Avoid using electrical equipment and appliances a like television.

Stay out of rooms that have a wet ceiling.

These might seem obvious, but it’s good to know. Be especially careful with wet ceilings. They could be much weaker than you think, and the last thing we want is for a roof to collapse on you!

Final Steps

The real work won’t start until the restoration company gets there. Professionals, such as SERVPRO, possess the equipment needed to do real water extraction and repair. Part of this process will involve installing certain equipment, be it professional-grade dehumidifiers and whatnot.

For all of your water, fire and mold restoration needs, give the professionals at SERVPRO of Greenwich a call today!

Stay Healthy During The Winter

2/8/2017 (Permalink)

Although this season is marked by jolly and wonder, there are some aspects that can burden some, either temporarily or over time. Here are some winter health tips that will keep you happy and healthy so that you can truly enjoy the holiday season in all of its glory.

  • Healthy Eating

After Thanksgiving’s kickstart, it is a common temptation to fall into the habit of eating a surplus of sugary, fattening comfort food. However the over indulging might make you start to feel like a part of the Clause family.

To stay on track with healthy eating, push aside those unhealthy comfort foods and make a substitution for something nutritious and tasty. A craving among most is food that is warm and savory due to the bitter cold outside. Most would be quick to grab a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies, but those may not be the healthiest choice. Soups or stews can satisfy that urge for warmth and flavor while benefitting you with a healthy variety of vegetables and protein. Sweet potatoes offer both savory and sweet food packed with good fats and are very filling. Pairing these foods with dark leafy greens and fresh fruit will create a perfect balance to keep you healthy this winter.

  • Exercise

Although winter deems it perfect weather for hibernation, staying indoors and sleeping beneath blankets all day won’t benefit our health. Get yourself motivated with some upbeat music and get into the swing of a revised workout routine. It obviously can be much more challenging if you are used to doing all of your workouts outside but if you happen to have a gym membership or an open space inside your home, you can quickly develop a newfound workout plan to keep conditioned over the next few chilly months.

Make sure to stretch and warm up before your workout. Since the temperature is so low, it takes more time for your joints and muscles to become ready for exercise. Also of great importance when exercising is to stay hydrated. Drink as much water as you can to keep your body a well oiled machine.

  • Keeping The Flu At Bay

During the winter, germs are flying left and right from those who already fell vulnerable to the common cold. From airborne germs from coughs and sneezes to hand to hand contact, there are many easy ways for you to catch these bugs too. To keep from getting ill it is very important to boost your immune system. Be sure to get proper vitamin intake either from supplements or healthy fruits and veggies. Vitamin C is especially helpful during the cold and flu season because it helps strengthen the immune system to fight of viruses and bacteria.

Stress can also be a major contributor of susceptibility to illness. Make sure you limit the stress of your day to day life through different tactics such as deep breathing or even meditation. Be sure to get proper hours of sleep as well to keep your immune system healthy and stress levels low.

On top of these factors it is also very important to keep the surfaces in your home clean and to always wash your hands after going to the bathroom or touching something that may be in contact with multiple people, such as a door handle or stair railing. This will further limit your chances of becoming sick with the common cold or something worse.

Puffbacks

1/30/2017 (Permalink)

Among the unfortunate occurrences of mishaps such as frozen pipes, air leaks and ice dams during the winter months, there is also the haywire messes caused by puff backs. A puff back is the result of an oil burner’s hinderance of ignition allowing fumes to accumulate and causes an eruption of debris to travel through a furnace’s exhaust system and into your home. This incident can cause soot to damage multiple areas of your home, especially if you have a heating installation that would allow it to travel by the means of air vents. The emission of soot signifies a problem rooted within the heating system. Although, this does not indicate that there is a need to replace the system entirely.

If a puff back has transpired, you may experience large areas of discoloration on walls, cabinets, curtains, bedding, windows and other areas, as well as an evident, strong and smoke like odor. Unfortunately the soot produced is not an easy mess to eradicate because it will withhold oil from the furnace making it diverse from soot’s common powdery form.

Most puff back cleanups are covered by insurance.  Don’t attempt to clean up the puffback residue without contacting us here at SERVPRO of Stamford first.  We will assess the damage and necessary restoration process. This should be done immediately to ensure the removal of the residue and chemicals is safe and efficient for both you and our staff.  A repair company should also be contacted to locate and correct the problem with your furnace.

In terms of preventing puff backs it may be helpful to inspect your furnace every so often to eliminate the buildup of debris and/or contact your heating company if you begin to experience any sign of soot in proximity to your furnace.

If you experience a puffback, call SERVPRO of Stamford 24/7.
