3 Things You Need To Know About Commercial Water Damage

3/6/2020 (Permalink)

When your business is affected by any type of water damage, it is an upsetting time.  So many questions need to be answered, and you may not know what the outcome will be. Here are three important things about water damage that are crucial to know.

1. Response time is critical

When you suffer water damage, you need to act fast.  The longer water sits, the more it is able to soak floorboards, carpets, and walls, leading to longer restoration time. This can mean longer for your business to resume operations.

Additionally, when time passes, the threat of secondary damage in the form of mold growth drastically increases.  Mold spores thrive in the exact conditions that water damage provides, and can begin to grow as soon as 24 hours after initial damage.  The area needs to be dried quickly to reduce the possibility of the mold growing.

2. The pollution level of the water is important.

All water damages are not created equally. Water can come from a variety of sources, and that dictates what category it falls under, and how the remediation process unfolds.

Category 1 - This is water that originates from a clean source.  This could be from a sink overflow or a break in a water supply line.  This water presents no health risks on its own.

Category 2 - Known as “grey water,” water in this category can come from sources like a dirty toilet or sump pump failure.  This water may cause illness through human contact. Water that starts as Category 1 can become Category 2 through contact with other contaminated materials.

Category 3 - This is water that presents serious and immediate health risks to those who come into contact with it.  This includes, but not limited to sewage or groundwater. In this category, water may carry bacteria, heavy metals, or other organic toxins.  Stagnant Category 2 water can easily turn into Category 3 over time.
